The short answer
An Admiral V washer that stalls mid-cycle, repeats a stage or finishes with the load still wet is usually waiting on a condition it cannot reach, not broken. A wash cycle is a sequence of conditions: enough water, hot enough, drained, balanced, door secure. The machine simply stops and waits when one of them is not met, so the useful question is which condition it is stuck on rather than which part has failed. Which condition is not being met, most likely first on the V line
- Slow fill, or a tap that is not fully open — Fill stages are time-limited, so a half-open tap or a clogged inlet screen means the level is never reached before the limit expires. - A partly blocked drain path — The machine will not leave a drain stage it cannot complete, so a filter half full of lint produces a stall rather than a puddle, and it is the most frequent find of all.
- Load balance blocking the spin — The machine retries and then abandons the spin rather than turning an unbalanced drum, and the only evidence the owner gets is a wet load.
- Heating never reaching temperature, or the control — A heated stage waits for a temperature it may never see, and a control fault is only the residual once every mechanical condition has been proven.

Isolate it first
Safety
Isolate the machine at its breaker, or draw the plug, before any panel is disturbed — a motor capacitor can hold stored charge well after the drum has come to rest. Shut both taps and let the drum empty through the pump filter before anything is unfastened, with cloths already down. Never reach for a plug while standing in water. The lid or door switch stays exactly as the factory wired it: it halts the drum whenever the machine is opened, and it is the one item on a washer nobody should work around. Anyone who feels a tingle from the cabinet or the taps should stop and leave the machine isolated.
When to call a technician
Call a technician when the drain, the fill, the load balance and the door latch have all been proven and the cycle still stalls. Call sooner if the machine stops with a full drum of hot water and will not release the door, or if you can smell hot insulation during a cycle. A machine that repeatedly re-arms the protective device on its circuit should be left switched off until it has been looked at.
