The short answer
On a Whirlpool refrigerator, E1 Error Code is not a description of a broken part. The manufacturer's entry for it is an instruction to power the appliance down at the breaker for a minute and let the control restart.
Error codes
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| E1 Error Code | Power unit down by turning off the circuit breaker(s) or unplugging the unit for one (1) minute. |
What you see and hear
- The code appears and the appliance stops responding normally — It may refuse a function, hold on the code, or sit with the display lit and nothing happening.
- It often follows a power interruption — A brownout, a surge or a switch thrown mid-cycle leaves the control part-way through an instruction, and that is exactly the condition a power cycle clears.
- NEAR MISS — the display is dark and nothing responds — That is a supply or fuse fault, not this code. A control with no power cannot display anything.
Causes, most likely first
- A transient state in the control — Ranked first because it is what the documented remedy implies. A single interrupted or unconfirmed instruction leaves the control holding a code it will drop as soon as it restarts.
- A marginal connection somewhere the control watches — A plug that is not quite seated produces an occasional unconfirmed instruction rather than a permanent fault, which is why the code appears now and then rather than every time.
- A power interruption or brownout during operation — A supply that dips while the appliance is working leaves the control mid-instruction, and it is the most common precursor to this class of code.
- A genuine hardware fault that the reset will not fix — Last: if the code returns immediately after a correct power cycle, it has stopped being a transient state, and the reset has done its diagnostic work by failing.
Check in this order, and why
- Do the power cycle exactly as documented — At the breaker, not the power key, and long enough for the display to go fully dark.
- Note whether the code returns, and how quickly — Gone for good means a transient. Back immediately means hardware. Back in a week means a marginal connection, and that is the hardest of the three to catch.
- Write down what the appliance was doing when it appeared — The function in progress points at the assembly involved, which matters only if the code comes back — and then it matters a great deal.
What an owner can safely do
- Switch the appliance off at the breaker for a full minute — Find the breaker rather than using the power key, switch it off, and wait with the display dark.
About 5 min
- Restore power and let the control come up fully — Give it time to finish its own start-up before you press anything.
About 5 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals or a panel off — That is the line between an owner check and a service call on this circuit.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before any panel or grille comes off. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut the water supply at the valve behind the unit before touching anything on the water side.
When to call a technician
Call if the code returns after a correctly performed power cycle, and especially if it returns immediately. At that point the documented remedy has been exhausted and the cause is in hardware — which means measuring at the control with the appliance open and live.

What this page does not cover
This page reads E1 Error Code as Whirlpool documents it for refrigerators in this range, so it covers the appliance class rather than one model line: a side-by-side, a French-door and a top-freezer can all show it, behind a different panel on each. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer, and it is linked from the code index below.
