Note whether the noise follows temperature
A sound that appears as the oven heats, repeats as it cycles, and stops once the appliance is cold belongs to expansion or switching. A sound that runs continuously whenever the oven is on, regardless of temperature, belongs to a fan. Those are the two families, and telling them apart takes one cycle and a little attention.
What you find
- A single loud bang as the oven heats or cools — A panel releasing as it expands, which is startling and harmless.
- Regular clicks every few minutes while cooking — Relays switching the element as the control holds temperature.
- A soft whoosh at intervals on a gas model — The burner lighting, which is normal combustion noise.
- A continuous whirr that does not follow temperature — A fan, which is the other family entirely.
- A scrape when a rack is moved or when the cavity heats — Racks shifting in their runners rather than any fault.
- NEAR MISS: ticking from a hot oven after switch-off — Contraction as it cools, and it is entirely normal.
Ranked for heating noises
- Panel expansion and contraction — First. A large steel panel moving against its fixings makes a startling noise from a completely benign cause.
- Relay switching — Second. The control switches the element on and off to hold temperature, and on some consoles that is clearly audible.
- Racks and trays moving — Third. They shift as the cavity changes shape slightly, and they are free to rule out by removing them.
- A fan bearing — Last for this page, and it is identified by noise that does not follow temperature at all.
Follow the temperature, then empty the cavity
- Note whether the noise appears with heating and stops when cold — It assigns the noise to one of the two families immediately.
- Count whether clicks follow a regular interval — Regular switching is the control doing its job.
- Take out racks and trays and heat the oven empty — It removes the third cause in one test.
- Treat a continuous temperature-independent noise as a fan — That is the branch that can actually need a repair.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any cover, and let the cavity cool completely first. Do not reach into a hot cavity to reposition a rack. If you smell gas on a gas model, do not operate any switch, leave the building, and call the gas utility or your local emergency number from outside.
When to call
Call for a continuous noise that does not follow temperature, since that is a fan and it can fail. Call for any noise accompanied by a burning smell, sparking, or a breaker that trips. Say whether the noise follows heating: that single observation separates normal behaviour from a genuine fault.
