Ask whether the oven is deaf or confused
Buttons that do not respond, or respond to the wrong press, are a keypad problem and they show up cold, before any heat is called for. Codes that appear after the oven has been heating, or a cabinet that overshoots or undershoots badly, are a sensing problem. Note which it is before a technician is called and the visit becomes far shorter.
What you find
- Some keypad buttons work and others do nothing — A panel fault, and the pattern of which buttons fail is itself diagnostic.
- The oven beeps and shows a code once it is up to temperature — A sensing fault, since it needs heat to appear.
- The display works but the oven never calls for heat — Could be either, and this is the case worth testing carefully.
- Food burns or undercooks consistently at a correct setting — Temperature sensing that is reading wrongly rather than a control failure.
- The panel resets or goes blank during self-clean — Heat reaching the control itself, which is a recognisable pattern on many built-in ovens.
- NEAR MISS: a clock that loses time after a power cut — Expected behaviour rather than a fault.
Ranked for an oven control
- The touch panel or membrane — First when the complaint is unresponsive buttons. The membrane is a thin printed layer that flexes with every press and it wears in a specific spot.
- The temperature sensor circuit — First when the complaint arrives with heat. A sensor reading out of range makes the control refuse to proceed and post a code.
- Heat reaching the control housing — Third. Built-in installations with restricted ventilation cook their own electronics, especially during self-clean.
- The control board — Last. It is the expensive suspect and the least likely one, and the three above explain most of these complaints.
Cold test, then hot test
- Press every button in turn with the oven cold and note which respond — It maps the panel fault precisely and it needs no tools at all.
- Set a low temperature and see whether the oven calls for heat — It separates a deaf panel from a confused sensor.
- If a code appears only when hot, note how long it takes — Timing is the evidence for the sensing branch and it cannot be recovered later.
- Check the installation is not blocking ventilation around the oven — The third cause, and it is the one most often overlooked in a fitted kitchen.

Before any panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any cover; an oven is on a dedicated circuit and pulling it out to reach a plug is rarely practical. Let the cabinet cool fully before working near it. Never run a self-clean cycle to test a control that has already misbehaved when hot, and stop immediately if you smell burning or see scorching at the panel.
When to call
Call if a pattern of dead buttons persists after a reset, or if a code appears reliably once the oven is hot. Call immediately for burning smells, scorch marks at the panel, or a breaker that trips when the oven heats. Bring the technician the cold-test map and the hot-test timing: together they usually identify which of the two halves has failed.
