H2O means no water was sensed
Whirlpool lists H2O with one potential cause: the dishwasher is not detecting water. Most often the water never left the house plumbing, because a shutoff valve is closed, a supply line is kinked or frozen, or the house pressure has dropped. Less often it arrives but is not sensed. Work from the house side towards the machine, and stop where the fault moves out of an owner's reach.

Clues that point to a missing fill
- The tub floor stays dry — A dry sump with no puddle under the filter means the fill never happened.
- No hiss or trickle at the start — A normal start brings a soft rush of water, so silence is a strong hint.
- Other taps in the house run weakly — Weak flow at the sink or shower points to a house-wide pressure problem.
- The code followed plumbing work — A new faucet or a cabinet clear-out often leaves the valve half closed or the line pinched.
- Cold weather and an outside wall — A line along an exterior wall can freeze in a hard cold spell.
Likely reasons, in the order to suspect them
- A closed or partly closed shutoff valve — The valve under the sink is the most common culprit and the easiest to put right.
- A kinked, crushed or frozen supply line — Pushing the dishwasher back, or a heavy item in the sink cabinet, can fold the line flat.
- Low water pressure in the house — Street works, a failing regulator or a well pump problem can starve every fixture.
- A blocked inlet screen or a failed inlet valve — Grit from plumbing work can clog the screen, or the valve can stop opening; both are technician work.
- A float or water-sensing fault — If water reaches the tub but the code persists, the fill-sensing part may be stuck or faulty.
Trace the water in this order
- Run the kitchen tap — Check that hot water flows at normal pressure at the sink nearest the dishwasher.
- Find the dishwasher shutoff — Look under the sink for the valve feeding the dishwasher line and make sure it is fully open.
- Follow the line — Trace the line with a flashlight, looking for sharp bends, crushing or frost.
- Look inside the tub — If your model has a float in the tub floor, check that it moves freely.
- Start a short cycle and listen — Start again and listen for the fill, noting whether H2O returns.
Owner steps for H2O
- Cancel the cycle — Cancel from the control panel before reaching under the sink.
About 2 min
- Open the shutoff fully — Turn the valve counterclockwise until it stops; a half-open valve may only trickle.
About 5 min
- Free the supply line — Ease out any kink by hand and have a creased or cracked line replaced.
Tools: flashlightAbout 10 min
- Let a frozen line thaw — Open the cabinet doors to let warm air in; never use a flame or a heat gun.
About 30 min
- Run a test cycle — Start a short cycle, confirm that water enters the tub, and watch whether the code stays away.

Water, power and the kick panel
Safety
Switch off the dishwasher's circuit breaker before moving the machine or reaching near its connections, and never remove the kick panel or control panel while it has power. Keep clear of any water on the floor until the power is off. Never pour water into the tub to force a cycle; it hides the fault and can overfill the machine.
When H2O needs a technician
Book a repair visit when the valve is open, the pressure is normal and the line is clear, yet H2O keeps returning. The fault then lies in the inlet valve, its screen, the water sensing or the control, which means opening the machine. Tell the technician what you checked and about any recent plumbing work.
