- Water standing in the sump when the cycle ends — A shallow pool, not a full tub: the pump moved most of it, just not fast enough.
- The pump is audible and runs on and on — A long unchanging drain note, then the code.
- Grit left on the lower rack — The restriction that slows the drain keeps soil in circulation.
- The sink drain gurgles while the dishwasher pumps — Points at the shared standpipe rather than at the machine.
What triggers it, most likely first
- A loaded filter or blocked sump screen — First: it is where every piece of soil the machine removes ends up, and it narrows gradually — the drain slows for weeks before the code appears.
- A kinked or sagging drain hose — Second: the hose is squeezed in behind the machine and takes a set. A loop out of its bracket holds a slug of water the pump must push uphill every cycle.
- A disposal inlet plug never knocked out, or a plugged air gap — Third, and the one missed for years: a new disposal ships with the dishwasher port blanked off, and the drain then works only as fast as the leak past it.
- A tired drain pump or a partly stuck check valve — Last — what is left when the filter is clean, the hose straight and the standpipe takes a jug of water without hesitating.
