The short answer
This code covers the sanitised indicator blinking, or sanitisation not being achieved by the end of a cycle. The requirement is a continuous hold above a temperature, and the word that does the work is continuous: anything that interrupts the hold ends it, including opening the door to add a forgotten plate.

Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 74 | Sanitized LED Blinks or noe Saniization End of a Cycle (Control Could Netmn Sanitization Achieved) |
What you observe alongside the code
- The sanitised indicator blinking or not lighting at the end — The claim being withheld.
- A cycle that ran noticeably longer than usual — The control waiting for a temperature it could not reach.
- Dishes clean but not especially hot at the end — Points at the heat step rather than the sensing.
- The cycle interrupted or the door opened part way — Breaks the temperature hold, and the claim goes with it.
What triggers it, most likely first
- The door opened or the cycle interrupted mid-hold — Second: the hold has to be continuous, and opening the door ends it.
- Incoming water too cold for the cycle to reach its target — First: the heater has to make up the whole difference, and on a long run from the water heater it often cannot within the cycle.
- A weak heating element or heater relay — Third: the temperature never arrives, so the claim is never made.
- A temperature sensor reading low — Fourth: the heat is there and the control cannot confirm it.
Check in this order, and why
- Run one cycle without opening the door at all — A hold has to be continuous, and this is the clean test of whether it can be achieved.
- Check the cycle and options actually selected — Free, and not every cycle claims sanitisation.
- Run the hot tap at the sink before starting — Gives the machine hot water to start from.
- Avoid opening the door once the cycle is running — A broken hold cannot be recovered.
Clearing the code, then the owner-safe checks
- Select the sanitising cycle or option deliberately — The indicator only appears where the claim is available.
About 5 min
- Run the kitchen hot tap until hot, then start the cycle — Reduces how much the heater has to make up.
About 10 min
- Run one cycle without opening the door at all — A clean test of whether the hold can be achieved.
About 30 min
- STOP HERE if the tub never gets hot on a sanitising cycle — That is the heater, its relay or the sensor, under the tub.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the dishwasher or switch off its breaker before removing the toe panel or the inner door panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the supply is not switched at the door. Bail any standing water out of the tub before working underneath, and go into the sump with gloves and a light — broken glass collects there. A sanitising cycle leaves the tub and its contents hotter than a normal one, so give it time before unloading.
When this code is a service call
Call when the tub does not get properly hot on a sanitising cycle with hot incoming water and the door left shut: the heater, its relay and the temperature sensor are the remaining suspects and all three sit under the tub. The machine is still washing in the meantime, so this is a claim you are missing rather than a machine you cannot use.

Which model lines this reading applies to
This reading of 74 applies to Whirlpool-built built-in dishwashers of the generation whose service documentation publishes this code, which is where the manufacturer documents it. A machine with a mechanical timer and no diagnostic display does not produce it, and the same characters can be published against a different fault on a KitchenAid or Maytag-badged unit from the same platform. Hold times and target temperatures are platform-specific firmware values, so figures from another machine do not transfer. Where a model-specific page exists for your unit it is linked above and is the more specific answer: component resistances, connector positions and part numbers differ by family and belong there.
