What this usually is
On a West Bend dryer a new noise is usually worn drum support rollers or glides. The character of the sound is the diagnosis: a rhythmic thump, a steady squeal and a hard rattle are three different parts. Run it empty for a minute: that single test removes the whole top of the list or confirms it.
What you actually observe
- A scraping sound as though something is rubbing — The drum is touching something it should not.
- NEAR MISS: the noise comes with a cold load — Read the heating page: a seized blower does both at once.
What it usually turns out to be, in order
- Worn drum support rollers or glides — The drum turns on rollers at the back and glides at the front. Worn flat or dry, they give a rhythmic thump or a low rumble that keeps time with the drum and gets louder as the machine warms. Ranked first on this unit: they carry the whole weight of the drum through every turn, so they are the part that wears out first on almost every dryer, which counts for more here because this is a familiar nameplate that gets repaired rather than replaced, so the parts you meet are the parts that wear.
- The machine not level, or its feet loose — A dryer standing on three feet walks and drums on the floor. Next, and for a closely related reason: it costs nothing to rule out and it is the only cause here with no broken part in it.
- A failing drum or blower motor bearing — A motor bearing gives a rising whine or a grinding that does not follow the drum at all. Last, and that is the point of this order: everything above it is cheaper and far more likely, and because a motor is the only real parts bill on this page.
Check in this order, and why
- Turn the empty drum slowly by hand and feel for a flat spot — A thump that keeps time with the drum is a roller.
- Press each corner in turn and see whether the machine rocks — A rock at any corner is your noise.
- Only once loose objects, rollers, levelling and the belt are ruled out — A grinding that does not keep time with the drum is the motor.
Owner-side checks, step by step
- With the machine unplugged, turn the drum slowly by hand through several revolutions — Feel for roughness or a regular catch. That is the diagnosis.

- Check all four feet are down and the machine does not rock, then level it front to back and side to side — Lock the feet once it sits firm.

Before you open anything
Safety
Power off at the breaker and gas off at the appliance valve, in that order, before anything else. If there is a smell of gas: leave it alone, get out, and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside, not from inside the house. Never tape a door switch closed to keep a drum turning, and never reach into a drum that is still moving. A packed vent next to a heating element is the fire risk here.
When to call a technician
Call once loose objects, the rollers, the levelling and the belt are ruled out and the noise is still there, because what remains is the blower or the motor. Call immediately if there is a burning smell, if the drum will not turn by hand, or if the noise arrives with longer drying times: that combination means airflow, and airflow with lint and heat is the fire risk.
