On a West Bend refrigerator a leak is usually a door seal letting humid room air in, not a burst pipe: the water is meltwater that the unit makes on purpose and has lost track of. Start by working out where the water appears, because that alone removes half the list.
What you actually observe
- Water appears only after a defrost, then stops — That timing is diagnostic: the drain path is the suspect.
- NEAR MISS: the cabinet is also warm — Then a drain leak is a symptom of a cooling fault, and the cooling page is the right one.
Causes, most likely first on this unit
- A door seal letting humid room air in — Warm air reaching a cold surface condenses. A seal that has taken a set, or a door held ajar by a shelf, keeps a slow supply of moisture going into the cabinet all day. First, and the whole order below follows from it: on a cabinet in a kitchen that is cooked in, humidity is the water source and the seal is the only thing holding it out.
- A blocked or frozen defrost drain — Every frost-free unit melts ice on a cycle and sends the water down a drain to a pan on the compressor. Second on this unit, because it is the one fault that explains water inside the cabinet, and water inside the cabinet is what most owners are actually looking at.
- An ice maker overfilling or its fill tube leaking — A valve that does not close fully, or a fill tube that has worked loose, drips continuously into the freezer. Bottom of the list, deliberately: it explains a leak that gets worse rather than better, and it is the only cause here that is also making a mess inside the freezer.
The order to check in
- Test the seal with a sheet of paper all the way round the door — Free slide anywhere means a gap and a steady supply of moisture.
- Look for ice or standing water under the crisper drawers — Water inside the cabinet is a drain fault until proven otherwise.
- Look at the freezer floor for a slab of ice under the ice maker — Ice there means the fill is not stopping when it should.
The checks you can make yourself
- Close the door on a sheet of paper at several points and check for drag, then clean the seal face — A soiled seal and a set seal look the same and only one of them is free to fix.

- Empty the bottom of the cabinet, find the drain hole at the back of the freezer floor and flush it with warm water — A turkey baster is the right tool. Never push wire into the hole.

Safety first, and it is not boilerplate
Safety
Switch the refrigerator off at its breaker, or unplug it, before any panel or kick plate comes off. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the compressor circuit is live the whole time the unit is plugged in. Leave the door switches exactly as they are: they cut the fan on purpose. Nothing on the sealed system is owner work, because refrigerant is licensed work.
When to call a technician
Call if water is reaching the compressor compartment or the unit trips a breaker, and stop using it until someone has looked at it. Call as well once the drain is clear, the seal is good and the line is dry, because what is left is behind a panel.
