The short answer
An ice maker needs three things: water arriving, a freezer cold enough to harvest, and a module that is switched on and not jammed. Nearly every no-ice call is one of the first two, and both are owner-checkable. Lift the mould and look. An empty mould means water is not arriving; a mould full of solid ice means the harvest is not happening, and those are opposite faults. On a Staigis refrigerator the cause that ranks first is fill tube or inlet valve frozen.
What you observe
- The dispenser also runs slowly — Water supply, which is the same fault seen from the door.
- The mould is empty and has been for days — Water is not arriving: supply, filter, valve or a frozen fill tube.
- The mould is full of one solid block instead of cubes — Water arrives but the harvest is not happening.

Causes, most likely first on a Staigis refrigerator
- Fill tube or inlet valve frozen — A slow drip freezes in the fill tube, the next fill backs up, and a plug of ice grows until nothing reaches the mould at all. It ranks first on a Staigis refrigerator because a full-size cabinet has enough margin to hide a fault for weeks, so by the time it shows, the cheap cause has usually been running a long time.
- Ice maker arm or sensor in the off position — The wire arm or the switch that stops the maker when the bin is full is left up, knocked up by a bag, or reading a bin that is not seated. Second on this platform: it is the free check that solves a surprising share of no-ice calls, so it comes before anything is dismantled.
- Water filter clogged or past its life — A filter at the end of its life restricts flow enough that the mould underfills or never fills, and the dispenser slows at the same time. Last, and the reason to work down the list rather than guess: a slow dispenser alongside no ice is this and nothing else.
Check in this order, and why
- Look at the fill tube at the back of the freezer for a plug of ice — A visible plug ends the diagnosis on the spot.
- Check the wire arm is down, or that the on switch is lit, and that the bin is seated — A raised arm or an unseated bin stops production entirely.
- Fill a glass at the dispenser and time how fast it runs — A slow dispenser and no ice together point straight at the filter.
What an owner can safely check
- Thaw the fill tube with a hair dryer on low, held well back, with the cabinet unplugged — Never use anything sharp or anything that gets hot enough to melt plastic.

Unplug the cabinet or switch off its breaker before reaching behind the ice maker or thawing a fill tube, and shut the water supply off before disturbing any plumbed joint.
When to call a technician
Call when the filter, the supply and the temperature are all ruled out, and sooner if the freezer itself is not holding temperature. On a machine at this price point, weigh any quoted repair against a replacement before agreeing to it: parts and labour reach the value of the appliance quickly.
