In short
A programme that never finishes is a programme stuck at one condition. The ranking here starts with timer, delayed start or a cook-time left set.
What you observe
- It heats, runs for a while, then shuts off and cools — A cut-out opening on temperature.
- The door is locked and will not release — A self-clean or a lock state that has not cleared.
- It ignores the programme and runs something else — A timer left in a mode, or a worn selector.
- NEAR MISS — the breaker trips when it shuts off — That is an electrical fault; read the electrical-safety page first.
Causes, most likely first on a SKS oven
- Timer, delayed start or a cook-time left set — A delayed start leaves the oven apparently dead until the delay expires, and neither is a fault. Ranked first on a SKS oven: the oven is obeying an instruction nobody remembers giving, which is a refusal rather than a failure.
- Door lock or self-clean lock not released — A self-clean cycle locks the door and will not release it until the cavity has cooled to a set point.
- Thermal cut-out opening on temperature — A cut-out opens when the cavity or the control area runs hotter than it should, which stops the cycle.
- Control latched after a power interruption — A cycle cut short by a power cut can leave the control in a state it will not run from.
Check in this order, and why
- Look for a cook-time, a stop-time or a delay indicator on the display — Small indicators are easy to overlook on a full-width panel.
- Check whether the door is locked and whether a clean cycle was run recently — Never force a locked oven door.
- Note whether it always stops after roughly the same run time — A consistent hot shut-off is a cut-out rather than a programme.
What an owner can safely check
- Cancel every programme, clear any cook time or delay, and run a plain bake with nothing else set — If the oven then completes normally, it was following a timer rather than failing.
About 20 min
- Let the oven cool completely, then switch it off at the breaker for several minutes and restore power — That releases most stalled locks. Never force the door — the mechanism is stronger than the handle.
Tools: torchAbout 30 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a panel off, a meter on live terminals, or the gas train — That is where the owner checks end; a built-in oven's supply and gas train are never owner work.
Before you open anything
Safety
Switch the oven off at its breaker before removing any panel or touching a terminal — a built-in oven sits on a large appliance circuit, typically 30 A or higher at 240 V, and a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Let the cavity cool completely first: an element and the glass stay dangerously hot long after the display goes out. If yours is a gas oven and you smell gas, do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself.
When to call a technician
Owner work is cancelling timers, clearing vents and power-cycling at the breaker. Lock motors, sensors, selectors and control boards are behind the panel and are a technician's job. Door and hinge work on a panelled machine is a trained job: the panel weight is carried by the hinge springs and a mis-set hinge damages the cabinetry as well as the appliance.

What this page does not cover
This is the generalised SKS oven page. A family- or model-specific page, where one exists, is linked above and is the more precise answer for your unit. Left out on purpose: part numbers, connector colours, the order panels come off in, and every torque figure — a generalised page cannot be right about any of them.
