The answer first
Switch the oven off at the breaker before anything else, then read the list. On this appliance the most likely cause is oven lamp or its holder.
What you observe
- The breaker trips as soon as the oven is turned on — A short somewhere in the heating or supply path.
- The breaker trips only when the oven reaches temperature — An element failing as it expands, which is the classic pattern.
- A flash or arc visible at an element — The element has split.
- NEAR MISS — you smell gas rather than burning — Do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
Causes, most likely first on a SKS oven
- Oven lamp or its holder — It is the smallest part on the list and one of the easier ones to find. Ranked first on a SKS oven: it is a small, cheap component that can trip the whole circuit, which makes it worth excluding early.
- Heating element split or arcing — That is why the trip so often happens minutes into a bake rather than at switch-on.
- Moisture in the cavity or the control after cleaning — Water that has got behind a panel or into a lamp holder during cleaning trips a breaker as soon as the oven heats.
- Terminal block or supply cable connection — A loose connection at the oven's terminal block heats, discolours and eventually arcs.
Check in this order, and why
- With the breaker off and the oven cold, look at the lamp and its glass cover — Do not change a lamp with the breaker on.
- Look at each element cold, in good light, for blisters, splits or bright arc marks — A blistered or split element is the answer, and the oven stays off.
- Ask whether the oven was cleaned or sprayed recently — A trip that started the day after a deep clean points here.
What an owner can safely check
- With the breaker off and the oven cold, inspect the lamp and its cover for blackening or cracks — A failed oven lamp can trip a circuit. Replace it only with the breaker off and the correct high-temperature type.

Isolate the oven at the breaker before any panel comes off; the circuit behind a built-in oven is a heavy one and a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is down. Wait for the cavity to cool — elements and door glass hold heat long after the oven appears off. On a gas oven, a smell of gas means do not switch anything on or off, leave the building and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
When to call a technician
Owner work stops at looking, with the breaker off and the oven cold. Elements, wiring, terminal blocks and controls are all at full circuit current and none of them is owner work. Leave the breaker off until it is fixed. Door and hinge work on a panelled machine is a trained job: the panel weight is carried by the hinge springs and a mis-set hinge damages the cabinetry as well as the appliance.
