The short answer
Most dead dishwashers are waiting for a condition rather than failing. Here the ranking starts with control lock, delayed start or demo mode.
What you observe
- The panel is completely dark — No power reaching the machine — the breaker, the switch or the socket.
- The panel lights but nothing happens on start — The machine has power and is declining to run.
- It beeps and the lights flash a pattern — A refusal with a reason: usually the door, a lock or a delay.
- NEAR MISS — it starts and runs but leaves the dishes dirty — That is a cleaning problem, not a start problem, and its own page ranks it.
Causes, most likely first on a SKS dishwasher
- Control lock, delayed start or demo mode — A delayed start counts down silently, so the machine looks dead until the delay expires. Ranked first on a SKS dishwasher: a lit panel that refuses to start is almost always locked or waiting rather than faulty.
- Door not latching, so the machine never confirms it — A rack pushed out slightly, or a tall item on the door shelf, holds the door a few millimetres open.
- Breaker, isolation switch or a tripped GFCI — A GFCI on the kitchen circuit trips for reasons elsewhere and leaves the machine dead.
- Water supply valve closed or the fill restricted — A machine that cannot fill will start and then stop, or sit humming without doing anything.
Check in this order, and why
- Look for a lock or delay indicator and try a long press on the lock key — Cancelling and reselecting the programme clears a delay.
- Push the door firmly shut and listen for the latch — A machine that starts when the door is pushed hard has a latch fault.
- Check the breaker, the isolation switch under the sink and any GFCI on the circuit — The isolation switch is often inside the sink cabinet and easy to catch by accident.
What an owner can safely check
- Hold the lock key for several seconds, then cancel and reselect the programme — That clears both a control lock and a delayed start, which between them explain most refusals.
About 10 min
- Push the racks fully in, close the door firmly until the latch engages, and try start again — If it runs when the door is pushed hard, the latch or strike is worn and is the fault to fix.
About 10 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a panel off or a meter on live terminals — That is where the owner checks end and a service call begins, whatever the ranking says.
Before you open anything
Safety
Power off at the breaker or isolation switch before any hand goes into the sump, and give a capacitor time to bleed down. Assume there is glass in the water: glove and torch, never bare hands. The water supply valve gets closed before a hose is loosened. Keep weight off the open door, and let the machine cool before reaching in after a hot cycle — the water and the heater both stay hot for a while.
When to call a technician
Call once the power, the door latch, the lock and the water supply are all proved and the machine still refuses, because what is left is the door switch, the wiring or the board — all behind a panel. Door and hinge work on a panelled machine is a trained job: the panel weight is carried by the hinge springs and a mis-set hinge damages the cabinetry as well as the appliance.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the SKS dishwasher as a class, not one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is linked above and it is the better answer — read it first. Deliberately not here: part numbers, wiring colours, panel removal order and torque figures, all of which differ between families under one nameplate.
