What a noise usually means on a Samsung
On a Samsung refrigerator, a loud whirring, buzzing or grinding from inside the cabinet is usually the evaporator fan striking frost that has built up around it. The diagnostic is free: that fan stops when a door is opened, so a noise that disappears the instant you open the door is coming from it. Ice maker harvesting and a cabinet that is not level explain most of the quieter complaints.
What you are seeing and hearing
- A loud whirring or grinding that stops the moment a door is opened.
- A rhythmic clunk from the door a few times a day.
- A hum or buzz from the lower rear that rises and falls.
- A rattle that comes and goes as the compressor cycles.

- Not this fault: A hiss or gurgle after the compressor stops is normal refrigerant settling.
Most likely causes, in Samsung order
- Evaporator fan striking frost behind the rear freezer panel — Why ranked: First on this brand and self-identifying: the noise stops when a door is opened because that is when the fan is switched off.
- Ice maker harvesting normally — Why ranked: Second because it is the most common noise mistaken for a fault. It is periodic, comes from the door, and is not a problem at all.
- Condenser fan obstructed by dust or debris at the base — Why ranked: Ranked here because it hums from the lower rear rather than from inside, which separates it from rank one on sound alone.
- Cabinet not level, or touching a wall or cabinetry — Why ranked: Turns normal compressor vibration into a rattle through the floor and the doors, and it is corrected without parts.
- Loose drip tray, tubing or a panel at the rear — Why ranked: Last by frequency, but it explains a rattle that tracks the compressor cycling exactly.
What to check, in order
- With the noise happening, open a door and listen. — Because: If it stops instantly it is the evaporator fan, and that single test settles rank one at no cost.
- Note whether the noise is constant or periodic, and where it comes from. — Because: Periodic and from the door is the ice maker; constant and from inside is the fan.
- Listen at the lower rear with the cabinet running. — Because: It separates the condenser fan from anything inside the cabinet.
- Push the cabinet gently and check clearance at the sides and the back. — Because: If the noise changes, it is rank four, and no part needs to be ordered at all.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A refrigerator is a heavy appliance - walk it out slowly with a second person. Never chip frost from an evaporator with a blade; you can pierce a refrigerant line. Do not force a frozen rear panel - it cracks, and the fan behind it is easily damaged.
When this becomes a service call
The noise stops when a door opens, which places it at the evaporator fan. Frost is visible around the rear freezer panel or in the vents. The cabinet has started to warm as well as make noise. A manual defrost quietens it and the noise returns within weeks.
