Samsung Oven Smoking? Causes & Fix
Read the smoke, not the panel. White or gray smoke with a food smell is grease burning off the concealed bake element, so clean it. Blue smoke with an electrical smell is the DG47-00060A element arcing — shut the oven off. Black smoke with a gas odor on an NX60 range is a valve leak and needs immediate service.
Most Likely Causes#
Samsung electric ovens (NE59, NV51 and similar) hide the bake element under the floor panel, so spills land above it and smoke on preheat — the most common cause by far. A brand-new oven smokes for its first 2-3 uses as factory coatings burn off, which is normal. The dangerous cases are an arcing element or, on gas NX60 ranges, a leaking valve.

Clean first#
Lift the floor panel up and toward you, then clean the panel and the cavity beneath it with a non-abrasive cleaner — Samsung warns against spray oven cleaners on its porcelain enamel. Run Steam Clean (a third of a cup of water, 250F) instead of self-clean for stubborn residue; it is gentler and smokes less. If a past spill soaked through to the insulation, it will smoke every cycle until the insulation is replaced.
Element, broil, valve#
An arcing DG47-00060A bake element or DG47-00065A broil element throws bright sparks and an acrid electrical smell you often cannot see on a concealed design — you only get smoke from the floor vents. On gas ranges the DG94-01012A igniter and DG94-01441A valve are the parts in play, and any gas odor beyond the brief puff when the igniter lights is a safety issue.
Troubleshoot in Order#
- Distinguish the smoke: food smell means clean, electrical means element and shut down, gas means valve and shut off the gas.
- Remove the floor panel and clean residue from the panel and the cavity.
- Run a Steam Clean cycle for baked-on grease instead of the 900-degree self-clean.
- Turn the range hood to maximum and open a window during any burn-off.
- Use Torx drivers (T15, T20, T25) for the panel screws so you don't strip Samsung's fasteners.
