Stop the cycle and switch the machine off at the breaker if you smell burning, if the cord or receptacle is hot, or if the duct connection has softened or discoloured. The conditions that belong here

What sits behind them
- Lint accumulated in the duct, the chute or the cabinet — First, because it is present in every one of these machines and it is what turns a small fault into a fire. It is also the only one an owner can remove.
- A degraded cord, plug or receptacle connection — Second. High current through a loose joint makes heat, the heat damages the contact, and the damage increases the heat.
- A failed heater shorting to the cabinet — Third. It explains a breaker that trips only when heat is called, and it is not visible from outside.

What to do, in urgency order
- Evacuate first if you smell gas, then call from outside — Nothing else here matters while a gas smell is unresolved.

- Do not run another load to reproduce the fault — Reproducing a thermal fault is the one test that can make the situation worse.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and remember that a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If you smell gas, do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or your local emergency number from outside; do not look for the leak yourself. Never run a dryer with the duct disconnected, and never vent one into the room: the lint and moisture it carries are exactly what the duct exists to remove.
