Judge the risk by airflow and by how long the machine has run hot
A dryer that has been drying slowly for months has been running hotter than designed for months, with lint accumulating the whole time. That combination is the risk, and it is addressed by clearing the whole air path and having the cabinet cleaned internally, not by waiting for something to smell.
What you find
- A hot or scorched smell during a cycle — The most serious finding, and a reason to stop the cycle and isolate.
- Drying times that have been increasing for months — The machine has been running hot for that whole period.
- The cabinet or the laundry room is unusually hot — Heat that cannot leave through the duct leaving through the machine.
- Lint visible around the door seal or behind the machine — Air escaping where it should not, carrying fibre with it.
- The machine stopped heating altogether — A protective device that has operated, which means it already overheated.
- NEAR MISS: a warm cabinet after a long cycle — Expected, and different from a cabinet that is hot to the touch.
Ranked by what makes a fire possible
- Lint accumulated inside the cabinet — First. It is the fuel, it is invisible without opening the machine, and it builds steadily over the appliance's life.
- A restricted duct — Second, and it is the mechanism that raises the temperature high enough to matter. The two together are the real risk.

Clear the air path, then have the cabinet done
- Note how long drying has been getting slower — It measures how long the machine has been running hot.
- Wash the filter and confirm water passes through the mesh — The invisible restriction, and the test is unambiguous.
- Clear the duct along its whole run — It is the mechanism, and clearing it lowers the temperature the fuel sits in.
- Have the cabinet interior cleaned during any service visit — It removes the fuel, which nothing an owner can do will reach.

The rules that matter here
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and never run the machine with a panel off. Never run a dryer with the lint filter missing: it is the only thing keeping most of the fibre out of the cabinet. Do not leave a dryer running when the house is empty or everyone is asleep, and stop immediately at any scorched smell.
When to call
Call immediately for any scorched or burning smell, and do not run the machine again meanwhile. Call for a duct cleaning if drying has been slowing for months, and ask for the cabinet interior to be cleaned at the same visit. A machine that stopped heating has already overheated, which makes it a priority rather than an inconvenience.
