The short answer
A cabinet that runs continuously and still warms up is almost never a dead compressor — a dead compressor is silent. It is nearly always something between the cold and the food: airflow, heat rejection, or a control that has stopped asking for cooling at the right moment. On a Ricci refrigerator the cause that ranks first is condenser coil or vent path blocked.
What you observe
- The cabinet is warm but you can hear it running — The compressor hum is there and steady; the air inside is not cold.
- Frost has built into a sheet on the freezer back wall — A light dusting is normal.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is silent and nothing is cold — That is a supply, start-relay or thermostat-open fault, and it belongs on the no-power page rather than this one.
Causes, most likely first on a Ricci refrigerator
- Condenser coil or vent path blocked — A coil blanketed in dust, or a cabinet with no clearance behind and above it, cannot reject heat. Ranked first on this refrigerator, because heat rejection is the quietest failure of the three and the easiest one to cause by accident.
- Door gasket not sealing — A gasket that has taken a set, or a door held ajar by a shelf item, loads the cabinet with warm humid air faster than it can remove it.
- Airflow closed off by a frosted evaporator — The defrost cycle stalls before it fails outright, so ice builds behind the rear freezer panel over weeks and closes the air path.
- Evaporator fan motor stopped — The fan behind the freezer rear panel is what pushes cold into both compartments.
Check in this order, and why
- Look at the condenser coil and the clearance around the cabinet — A dust blanket or a cabinet pushed flat to the wall is visible in a moment and explains the whole symptom.
- Close the door on a sheet of paper and pull it out at several points around the frame — A gasket that lets the paper slide free is not sealing at that point.
- Look behind the freezer rear panel for a frost sheet — It confirms or clears the airflow cause before any part is considered, and it needs nothing but a screwdriver and a light.
What an owner can safely check
- Pull the cabinet out and clear the condenser coil and the grille — A vacuum and a soft brush.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the cabinet or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not defeat the freezer door switch by wedging it; hold it in by hand for the moment you need to listen, then let it go. Refrigerant work is licensed work: never open, cut or braze a sealed-system line, and do not attempt to add refrigerant to a domestic cabinet.
When to call a technician
Call once the airflow, heat-rejection and seal checks are all clean, because what is left is behind a meter or inside the sealed system. Call immediately if you see oil at the compressor or at any tube joint: oil outside the tubing means the loop is open, and every further hour of running makes the repair larger.
