Miele's automatic programs adapt to each load instead of running fixed settings, and three sensing systems make that possible. The pressure sensor tracks water level, the NTC sensor tracks temperature, and load sensing estimates the laundry's weight.
The Three Sensing Systems#
Pressure sensor. An analog device linked to the wash tub by a thin air tube. As water fills, air pressure in the tube rises, and the sensor turns that into a water-level signal for the board.
NTC temperature sensor. A probe in the water path that feeds continuous temperature readings to the heating control.
Load sensing. Not a separate part but a technique — the board reads the main motor's resistance during a slow initial drum rotation to estimate how heavy the load is, then sets water and cycle accordingly.

Symptoms by Sensor#
- Over- or under-filling — a pressure-sensor fault, or a blocked or disconnected air tube
- Water not reaching the right temperature — the NTC sensor reading incorrectly
- A water-level or temperature error code — a sensor reading out of range
- Too much water for a small load — load sensing misjudging the weight
- The washer skipping drain — the pressure sensor stuck reading full, so the board never sees the level it expects to drop
Check the Air Tube First#
The single most common false alarm here is the pressure sensor's air tube. A tube that is cracked, kinked, or popped off its barb produces the exact symptoms of a dead sensor — overfilling, underfilling, or a skipped drain — for the cost of nothing. Before ordering a pressure sensor, pull the tube, check it end to end, clear any blockage, and reseat it firmly. Only if the tube is sound does the sensor itself become the suspect.

Replacing the Sensors#
Pressure sensor:
- Disconnect power and remove the top panel.
- Find the small disc with a rubber tube running to the tub.
- Check that tube first, then disconnect it and the wire connector.
- Remove the mounting screws and fit the new sensor.
NTC sensor:
- Disconnect power and remove the lower front or rear panel, depending on model.
- Locate the probe in the water path near the heater.
- Unplug the two-wire connector, release the probe clip, and fit the replacement.
Both use simple connections and need no calibration. Tools are a Torx Plus T20 driver — standard Torx will strip Miele's fasteners — and a multimeter.
Life, and When to Call a Pro#
Both sensors are built for the machine's full life and typically run 15 to 20 years, so a genuine sensor failure is uncommon and often turns out to be that air tube instead. When you do need parts, Miele is OEM-only with no aftermarket option, and parts price around 30 to 50% above mass-market equivalents. One caveat worth knowing: because Miele's control board talks to its sensors, motor, and heater over a proprietary bus, some component swaps ask the board to re-learn the new part through a diagnostic calibration, which is where an authorized technician and the Miele service tool become the practical route for anything past a simple clip-in.

Sensor or Board?#
Because Miele's sensors so rarely fail outright, a stubborn water-level or temperature fault that survives an air-tube check and a fresh sensor usually lives in the control board or its wiring rather than the sensor. Before assuming the worst, reseat every connector you disturbed and inspect the wiring for corrosion, since a green, crusted contact mimics a dead sensor for the price of nothing. If a genuine board-level fault is confirmed, that is the point where the proprietary diagnostic tool and an authorized technician earn their keep — the board's re-learn routine for a new component is not something you can complete with hand tools. Ruling the cheap causes out first keeps a sensor swap from turning into an unnecessary board replacement.
