The drum motor has a hard job: it must accelerate the drum plus a load of wet laundry — a full load of wet towels can weigh 15 to 20 pounds — from a standstill to speed smoothly, and it does so while reversing direction periodically to stop clothes balling up. That stop-reverse-start sequence, thousands of times a cycle, is what stresses the windings and bearings over the years.
Signs the motor is failing#
- Drum will not turn, motor hums — the motor is seized or the start winding failed
- Squealing or grinding under the drum — motor bearings are wearing out
- Drum turns slowly or unevenly — partially shorted windings reducing output
- Burning smell from the motor area — overheating windings, usually from bearing friction
- Stops mid-cycle with a motor-related code — the board saw overcurrent or lost speed feedback

Test before you replace#
Reach the motor connector from the rear and measure winding resistance — a healthy Miele dryer motor reads low, on the order of a few ohms — then check terminal-to-housing for a ground fault, where any reading means the motor is grounded and done. Crucially, spin the belt and tensioner check first: a worn belt or a stuck tensioner produces a humming, no-spin symptom identical to a dead motor, and it is a far cheaper fix.
Replacing the motor#
- Disconnect at the breaker and detach the exhaust duct on a vented model.
- Remove the top panel (Torx Plus T20 at the rear), then the rear panel.
- Release the belt tensioner and slip the belt off the motor and drum.
- Unplug the motor connector and ground wire.
- Remove the three or four Torx Plus T15 bolts from the motor bracket and extract the motor, noting the pulley orientation.
- Transfer the drive pulley if the new motor does not include one, fit the motor, route the belt, set the tensioner, reassemble, and test.
Required tools: Torx Plus T15 and T20 drivers and a tensioner tool or long flat screwdriver. Belt routing is the fiddly part, so take a photo before you remove the old belt.

Miele drum motors typically last 15 to 20 years, helped by the dedicated design that never overworks them with blower duty; bearing wear from lint infiltration, overheating from restricted airflow, and voltage swings on a shared circuit are the usual killers, so run the dryer on its own 30-amp circuit and clear lint from the motor area whenever the rear panel is off. Two practical notes: Miele uses Torx Plus security fasteners, not standard Torx, so genuine T15 and T20 drivers are mandatory to avoid stripping heads, and the brushless DC motor on heat-pump models may need a board initialization after the swap — one reason those particular jobs are better left to a professional while the belt-drive AC motor is a reasonable DIY.
Reversing, feedback, and clean airflow#
The periodic direction reversing is not optional flair — it keeps a load from twisting into a single ball that dries unevenly — but it is also the duty cycle that wears the bearings, so a motor that runs quietly in one direction yet grinds on reversal is telling you the bearings are going. On heat-pump models the DC motor reports its actual speed and current draw to the board in real time, which means a motor-related fault code there can reflect a sensing or wiring issue as much as the motor itself; confirm with the resistance test before committing to the expensive part. Keeping the lint path clear does more for motor life than any other single habit, because lint that reaches the bearings is what ends most of these motors early.
