What standing water usually means here
On a Midea dishwasher, most of which are recent installations, the first thing to rule out is the plug inside the disposer inlet. A new disposer ships with that connection blanked off, and if it was never knocked out the dishwasher can never drain. After that come the ordinary causes: a blocked tub filter, a drain hose with no high loop, and something hard jammed in the pump.
What you are seeing
- Water sits in the bottom of the tub at the end of every cycle.
- The machine has never drained properly since the day it was fitted.
- A rattle or grinding sound when the machine tries to drain.
- Dirty water appears in the tub between cycles.
- Not this fault: A small pool of clean water in the sump is normal and keeps the seals wet.
- Not this fault: Water on the floor rather than in the tub is a leak, and a different page.
Most likely causes, in order
- Disposer knockout plug never removed — Why ranked: First on a recent install. The machine has no route out at all, and no amount of cleaning or part replacement will change that.
- Tub filter clogged — Why ranked: Second, and the commonest cause on a machine that used to drain. The filter is reachable by hand and is meant to be cleaned regularly.
- Drain hose kinked, or with no high loop — Why ranked: Ranked here because it explains water siphoning back into a tub that had already emptied - the version of the fault that comes and goes.
- Something hard jammed in the drain pump — Why ranked: It announces itself with a rattle or a grind, which nothing above it does, and it will damage the pump if the machine keeps running.
- Drain pump failed — Why ranked: Last. It is the part owners assume first and the least likely of the five, especially on a machine that never worked from new.
What to check, in order
- Ask whether the machine has ever drained properly since it was installed. — Because: A never-worked answer points straight at rank one and skips everything else.
- Twist out the tub filter and look at what is in it. — Because: Rank two is the most common cause on a machine that used to work, and it needs no tools.
- Follow the drain hose under the sink and look for a kink or a missing high loop. — Because: Rank three is visible and explains water that returns after draining.
- Listen during the drain part of the cycle for a rattle or grind. — Because: Rank four is identified by sound alone, before any panel comes off.

Before you reach into the tub
Safety
Switch off the dishwasher breaker before reaching into the sump, and never put a hand into a disposer. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The water in a tub can still be hot at the end of a cycle. Broken glass in the sump is common; use gloves and a torch, not bare fingers. Never run the machine to test while the pump cover is off.
When this becomes a service call
The machine has never drained since installation. Water stays with the filter clean and the hose confirmed clear. A rattle or grind comes from the pump. Water backs up into the sink when the dishwasher drains.
