The short answer
F3 E5 is how this dryer reports a problem in the moisture sensing. The code table records the documented meaning, and the causes below it are ordered by how often each one is the answer. Switch to a timed cycle and the appliance carries on working.
The documented code and its meaning
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| F3 E5 | The F3E5 error code occurs when five consecutive loads are dried without registering moisture sensor data. Pressing the 'Power' button will clear the error code and allow you to restart the machine. If the problem persists, call for |
What you actually observe
- Heavy softener or dryer-sheet use over a long period — The film that causes this builds up slowly.
- Automatic cycles stop with the load still damp — The control ended the cycle because it never saw moisture change.
- Small loads finish almost immediately — A load too small to touch the strips reads as already dry.
- NEAR MISS — no heat at all on any cycle — That is a heating question and a different code.
Causes, most likely first on this dryer
- Softener residue filming the sensor strips inside the drum — A film insulates the strips from the load, so the control never sees wet fabric and assumes the sensor is not working.
- Very small loads that never bridge the sensor — One or two items may not touch the strips at all, and several such loads in a row look like a dead sensor.
- The sensor wiring or its connection at the bulkhead — The run is short, but it is in the hottest part of the cabinet.
- A control input that no longer reads the strips — Least likely, and worth checking only after the strips have been cleaned.
Check in this order, and why
- Wipe the sensor strips in the drum with a little rubbing alcohol — Free, quick, and the fix in most of these cases.
- Run one normal, full load rather than a small one — A proper load is the only reliable test of a moisture circuit.
- Switch to a timed cycle as a temporary measure — It bypasses the sensing entirely and lets the appliance stay useful while a visit is arranged.
- Ask how much dryer sheet or softener has been used — Heavy use is the cause behind most of the cleanable version of this fault.
What an owner can safely check
- Find the two metal strips inside the drum and wipe them clean — They are usually on the front bulkhead near the lint screen opening. A little rubbing alcohol on a cloth removes the film.
Tools: soft cloth, rubbing alcoholAbout 10 min
- Run a full ordinary load on an automatic cycle — A small load will not reach the strips and will repeat the fault with nothing wrong.
About 60 min
- Use a timed cycle if the automatic one still misbehaves — It keeps the appliance usable and tells the technician the sensing circuit is the suspect.

Safety
Nothing comes off until the power is off. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Electric models sit on a heavy two-pole circuit; gas models still carry their own mains supply. The drum stays hot after the cycle ends. Leave the door switch and the latch wiring exactly as the factory set them: they cut power where the design intends, and that is not a wire to move.
When this stops being an owner job
A technician is the right next step if the code returns after the strips are clean and a full load has been run. Everything past that point needs the panels off, and the console has to be released before the harness connections are visible. A burning smell, scorching around the controls or a breaker tripping at start-up all change the answer to now, whatever else this page says.

What this page does not cover
What is written here about F3 E5 comes from the code set shared across Maytag dryer model lines on one control platform. What it is not: a reading for an older control generation that shows the same characters for something else, and not a source for wiring colours, pin numbers, torque values or part numbers. Those differ family by family. A family or model page, where one exists, is the more specific answer and should be followed instead; the index linked below is where they are collected.
