The short answer
When a Maytag dryer displays F30, the control is naming the exhaust and airflow. What the manufacturer documents is in the table; what to check first is in the ranking under it. Clear the vent path before running anything long: a restricted duct is a fire risk.
The documented code and its meaning
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| F30 | An F30 (Restricted Air Flow) error code indicates that the lint screen or vent is clogged; the vent may be crushed, kinked or have too many turns. |
What you actually observe
- The drum and the load are hot but still damp — Heat with no airflow is the exact signature of a restricted vent.
- The laundry area feels humid or smells of warm lint — Air that cannot get out ends up in the room.
- Loads take two or three cycles to dry — The most common way this is noticed, usually months before the code appears.
- NEAR MISS — the drum turns and there is no heat at all — No heat at all is a heating-circuit question, not an airflow one.
Causes, most likely first on this dryer
- A lint screen that is loaded, or coated by fabric softener sheets — A screen that looks clean can still be sealed by a film, and the film is invisible until water is poured through it.
- Lint packed in the duct behind the appliance — The first two feet of duct catch the most, and that is the part nobody removes.
- A crushed, kinked or over-long vent run — Every bend costs airflow; a flexible duct squashed behind the machine costs more than all the bends together.
- A blocked or frozen exterior vent flap — Lint or a bird nest at the hood stops the air at the last inch of the run.
Check in this order, and why
- Clean the lint screen and pour water through it — Water that beads or sits on the mesh means a softener film, which is the cause people miss most.
- Pull the appliance out and look at the duct behind it — A crushed flexible duct is visible immediately and is the commonest single finding.
- Go outside and watch the vent hood while a cycle runs — Strong warm air at the hood clears the whole duct in one observation.
- Count the bends and the length of the run — A run that grew during a kitchen or laundry remodel is a frequent trigger for a code that was never there before.
What an owner can safely check
- Clean the lint screen and rinse it if it has a film — Wash with warm soapy water, rinse and dry fully before it goes back in.
Tools: warm water, mild detergentAbout 10 min
- Disconnect and clear the duct behind the appliance — Take the power off first, then pull the unit forward far enough to reach the duct.
Tools: vacuum, duct brushAbout 30 min
- Check the outside hood and clear the flap — The flap should swing freely and close when the cycle stops.
Tools: glovesAbout 15 min

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Electric models sit on a heavy two-pole circuit; gas models still carry their own mains supply. The drum stays hot after the cycle ends. Leave every safety switch wired as it was found. Each one interrupts power somewhere the design needs it interrupted.
When this stops being an owner job
Call if the code returns with the screen clean, the duct clear and the hood open. Beyond that the diagnosis needs instruments rather than observation, and the console has to be released before the harness connections are visible. Whatever the timing above, a burning smell, visible scorching or a tripping breaker means the appliance goes off at the breaker and the call goes in today.

What this page does not cover
The F30 reading set out here is the shared-platform one for Maytag dryer models, not a single-model one. It stops short of older platforms that display the same characters for a different condition, and it carries no family-specific detail at all — no wiring colours, no pin numbers, no torque figures, no part numbers. Those belong on the page for the family concerned. Where such a page exists it outranks this one, and the code index below is where it is listed.
