The short answer
When a Maytag cooktop displays FC E1, the control is naming the user interface. The table below carries the manufacturer wording for it, and the ranked causes under that put the likely ones first. The appliance stays usable while it still does what you ask of it.
The documented code and its meaning
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| FC E1 | There may be a problem with the Cooktop User Interface (Touchpad), or the associated wiring. |
What you actually observe
- A tone sounds when the appliance is idle and untouched — The control believes a key is being held.
- The display dims or brightens with no input — Worth reporting: it narrows the supply question on the interface side.
- One or more keys do nothing when pressed — Map which keys respond before anything else: that map is the diagnosis.
- NEAR MISS — the whole panel is dark — That is a supply or a control question, not an interface one.
Causes, most likely first on this cooktop
- A key held active by residue, spill or a lifted overlay — Duration is what the control measures, so anything keeping a key shut looks like a finger and not like dirt.
- A failed membrane or touch panel behind the glass — Touch panels age unevenly, so a single unresponsive zone is far more common than a dead panel.
- The ribbon or plug between interface and control — This is the connection most often disturbed during a previous repair, and it is the cheapest thing in the chain to put right.
- A fault on the interface board itself — Last, because it is the part people buy first and the one least often actually responsible.
Check in this order, and why
- Clean and dry the whole panel before anything else — Residue heads this family and costs nothing whatever to eliminate.
- Press each key in turn and note which respond — A map of which zones work tells a technician whether the panel or the control is the suspect.
- Power down, restore, and repeat the key test — If the pattern of dead keys moves after a restart, the panel is not the fault; if it stays put, it is.
- Ask whether the panel was wiped with a spray cleaner — Cleaner that has crept under an overlay shows up as exactly this, a day or two later.
What an owner can safely check
- Wipe the whole control surface with a damp cloth and dry it completely — Use plain water or a mild soap solution, not a spray cleaner aimed at the panel, and dry the edges where liquid collects.
Tools: soft cloth, mild detergentAbout 10 min
- Check nothing is resting on or against the control area — A handle, a cloth or a phone left on the controls keeps a key active with nothing at all broken.
About 2 min
- Power down at the breaker for a minute, then restore and retest the keys — This separates a fault that is happening now from one the control merely remembers.

Safety
Take the power away first: unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, since a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. There is usually no cord to unplug on a cooktop, which makes the breaker the only way to isolate it. Residual heat in the glass outlasts the display by a long way. Nothing on the door circuit should be re-routed or held closed. It interrupts power by design.
When this stops being an owner job
Book the visit if the code returns after a careful clean and a full power-down. At that point the next step is a meter or a panel off, and the top has to come out of the counter before any component below it is accessible. Bring the call forward if you smell burning, find scorching near the control area, or the breaker trips as the appliance starts.

What this page does not cover
The FC E1 reading set out here is the shared-platform one for Maytag cooktop models, not a single-model one. Earlier generations that reuse these characters for a different condition are outside it. So are wiring colours, connector positions, torque figures and part numbers, all of which vary by family and belong on a family page rather than here. If a page exists for your family or model, go there first — it is the more specific answer — and the code index below lists them.
