The short answer
F12 on a Maytag cooktop is the control reporting a fault in the element circuit. The code table records the documented meaning, and the causes below it are ordered by how often each one is the answer. Use the working zones and leave the dead one alone.
The documented code and its meaning
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| F12 | There may be a problem with a Hotplate (Cooking Surface/Burner/Element), or the associated wiring. |
What you actually observe
- The element glows unevenly or only in part — Where it is visible, this is a definitive observation.
- The rest of the cooktop works completely normally — Which is what makes this a single-circuit fault.
- Heating is weaker than it used to be on one area — An element can weaken before it opens.
- NEAR MISS — every zone is dead at once — That points at the supply or the control, not at one element.
Causes, most likely first on this cooktop
- The element or coil itself having gone open — An element is a wire with a lifetime, and it usually fails at one spot without any outward sign.
- The connection at the element terminal — This joint runs hot every time the appliance is used, and heat is what loosens it.
- Wiring between the element and the control — A conductor damaged where it passes a metal edge produces the same reported fault.
- The switching device on the control — Last of the four: possible, and the most expensive place to start guessing.
Check in this order, and why
- Note whether one zone or all of them are affected — One zone points at that element and its wiring; all of them point at the supply or the control.
- Check whether the affected zone ever heats at all — No heat at all and intermittent heat are two different faults.
- Ask whether anything was spilled and boiled over recently — A heavy boil-over into a terminal area is a routine trigger.
- Leave the element connections to a technician — They are under the glass or behind a panel and they are on the mains side.
What an owner can safely check
- Try each zone separately and write down which ones work — The map of working and failed zones is the most useful thing you can hand a technician.
Tools: pen and paperAbout 10 min
- Check the pan and the zone size before deciding a zone is dead — A pan that is much smaller than the zone can look like a zone that is not heating.
About 5 min
- Take the power off at the breaker and stop there — Everything under the glass is a service job.

Safety
Before any panel comes off, unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker: a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On most installations there is no plug: the cooktop is wired in, and the breaker is the isolation point. Treat the glass as hot well after the display says the zones are off. The switches on the door are there to cut power at a particular moment. Leave their wiring as it was found.
When this stops being an owner job
This becomes a service call once one zone is confirmed dead with a suitable pan on it. Everything past that point needs the panels off, and nothing under the glass can be reached until the unit is lifted out of its cutout. Three things override that timing: a burning smell, scorch marks near the controls, and a breaker that trips on start-up. Any of them means stop and call now.

What this page does not cover
This page reads F12 the way the shared Maytag cooktop code set defines it, which is the reading that holds across the model lines using that control platform. Older control generations that reuse the same characters are not covered, and neither is anything family-specific: wiring colours, connector pin numbers, torque figures and part numbers all change from family to family and are deliberately absent. A family or model page, where one exists, is the more specific answer and should be read in preference to this one — the linked code index collects them.
