The short answer
On a Maytag cooktop, F03 is the control reporting that it could not carry out what it was asked to do, and pointing at the touch control module or the wiring to it.
Error codes
Reference| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| F03 | There is an internal communication error on the touch control module . |
What you see and hear
- The controls do not respond and the zones will not start — The panel may light up and still refuse every key, because the part that lights it is not the part that lost the conversation.
- The code appears at the same point every time, or at no predictable point — Which of the two it is matters more here than the code number, because it separates a permanent fault from an intermittent one.
- NEAR MISS — the display is dark and nothing responds at all — That is a supply or main-fuse fault rather than this code, and it belongs on the no-power page.
Causes, most likely first
- Moisture or soil has reached the module or its connector — Ranked first because it is the common cause and the recoverable one.
- Heat under the glass has stressed the module — A cooktop with restricted ventilation cooks its own electronics, and an intermittent communication fault is often the first sign of that.
- A ribbon or connector between the panel and the switching board is unseated — These assemblies are joined by flat ribbons and push-fit plugs that back out with heat cycling, and a half-seated ribbon fails exactly like a dead module.
- The touch control module has failed — Last: it is the expensive answer, and it is only credible once moisture, the connectors and the ventilation have been ruled out.
Check in this order, and why
- Power the appliance down completely, then restore it — Not a standby reset — the breaker or the plug, so the board loses its stored state.
- Note whether the code appears from cold or only once the appliance is hot — A fault that needs heat to show itself is a different search from one that is there from the start, and the answer is free.
- Reseat the ribbons and plugs on the named assembly — With the breaker off and the panel open, each plug is pulled and pushed home.
What an owner can safely do
- Cut power at the breaker for a full minute, then restore it — A full power-down clears the stored fault and any latched relay state.
About 5 min
- Photograph the display and the rating plate before you start — The code and the model number are the two things a technician needs and the two most often remembered wrongly.
About 10 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals or a panel off — That is the line between an owner check and a service call on this circuit.
Before you open anything
Safety
Switch the cooktop off at the breaker before the control panel comes off or you reach under the glass. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If the cooktop burns gas and you smell gas: leave the building without switching anything on or off, call the gas utility or emergency services from outside, and do not look for the leak yourself.
When to call a technician
Call if the code survives a full power-down, or if it returns every time you select the function.

What this page does not cover
This page reads F03 as Maytag documents it for cooktops in this range, so it covers the appliance class rather than one model line: a radiant glass top and an induction top can both post it, and the module under the glass is not the same part. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer, and it is linked from the code index below.
