Check the manual for an automatic shut-off period
If a long cook consistently ends at about the same elapsed time, and that time is nothing you set, the automatic limit is the explanation. Many ovens let you extend or disable it for exactly this reason, usually through a setting in the control menu, and the manual describes both the period and whether it can be changed.
What you find
- A long cook ends by itself after a consistent number of hours — The signature of a fixed limit rather than a fault.
- The elapsed time is the same whatever the temperature — A limit on duration rather than anything to do with heat.
- Short and ordinary cooking is entirely unaffected — Consistent, since nothing normal runs long enough to reach it.
- The display shows a shut-off indication rather than an error — The appliance reporting a designed action, not a failure.
- Cycles end at random durations instead — Not the limit, and a different diagnosis entirely.
- NEAR MISS: a cook time set by somebody else — Also stops the oven, and it is worth excluding first.
Ranked for a long cook that stops
- The automatic shut-off period — First. It is a fixed limit on continuous cooking, it is rarely documented anywhere the owner looks, and slow cooking is the only thing that meets it.
- A cook time or timer set — Second. It produces the same silent stop, and the two are told apart by whether the interval matches the appliance limit.
- A supply interruption — Third. It ends the cycle and usually leaves a flashing clock as evidence.
- A thermal or control fault — Last, and it is indicated when stops happen at varying durations with no timer set.
Time it, then read the manual
- Note the elapsed time at which the oven stops — A consistent figure is the limit; a varying one is not.
- Check the manual for an automatic shut-off and its period — It confirms the figure and says whether it can be changed.
- Cancel any cook time and repeat — It excludes the second cause cleanly.
- Look at the clock after a stop — A flashing clock points at a supply interruption instead.
Owner steps
- Note the time you start a long cook and the time the oven stops — A consistent elapsed figure across several attempts identifies a fixed limit.
Tools: notepadAbout 10 min
- Look in the manual for an automatic or safety shut-off period — It is often in a settings section rather than in the cooking instructions.
About 15 min
- Change or disable the setting if the control allows it — Many ovens permit an extension precisely for slow cooking.
About 10 min
- Cancel any cook time and confirm no timer indicator is showing — A timer produces the same silent stop and needs excluding.
About 5 min
- STOP before the control panel or the rear cover is opened — Mains voltage and a heating circuit sit behind them, and that is the boundary.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any cover, and let the cavity cool completely first. Think carefully before disabling an automatic shut-off: it exists so an oven left on by accident does not run indefinitely. Never leave a long cook running with the house empty, and stop at once for any burning smell.
When to call
Call if the oven stops at varying durations with no timer set and a clock that is not flashing, since that points at a thermal or control fault. Call immediately for burning smells or a tripping breaker. Say whether the elapsed time is consistent: a fixed figure is a feature and a varying one is not.

Scope
Written for the LG oven class rather than one model line. Shut-off periods and whether they can be changed differ by family, and the manual for your specific appliance is the authority on both.
