Why won't my LG microwave turntable turn?#
An LG microwave turntable that won't rotate comes down to three parts under the glass tray — the turntable motor, the tri-lobe drive coupler, and the roller guide — plus the occasional culprit of food debris jamming the works. LG's direct-drive turntable has no belt or gears, so the motor drives the coupler straight, and when rotation stops it's usually the motor burning out or the coupler stripping.
LG microwave turntable not turning: ranked causes#
| Likely cause | Share | Tell |
|---|---|---|
| Turntable motor burnout | 35% | No rotation and no hum, or a hum with no movement |
| Broken or stripped drive coupler | 25% | The motor clearly runs, but the tray sits still |
| Jammed or damaged roller guide | 20% | Grinding, very slow rotation, or stalling at one spot |
| Food-debris obstruction | 10% | Worked fine, then stopped; cleaning fixes it |
| Control-board motor circuit | 10% | The motor is dead but everything else works |
Food-safety note: without rotation, heating is very uneven and cold spots can harbor bacteria, so it's risky for reheating leftovers or defrosting. Until it's fixed, rotate the food by hand a quarter-turn every 30 seconds while it cooks.

How to diagnose an LG microwave turntable#
Remove the glass tray and roller guide, then watch the drive coupler during a short run.
- If the coupler doesn't move and there's no sound from below, the motor has an open winding — it's dead. LG's turntable motor draws only 3 to 5 watts but runs every cycle for years, so burnout is common. The motor part is 6549W1S011B on many models, and its windings should read about 100 to 300 ohms.
- If you hear a hum but the coupler won't turn, the motor has seized or its rotor has demagnetized — same replacement.
- If the coupler spins but the tray doesn't, the tri-lobe coupler's lobes are rounded or cracked. Pull the press-fit coupler straight off the shaft and fit a new one — LG part 4370W1A006B. If the tabs on the underside of the glass tray are stripped too, the tray itself needs replacing.
- If the tray grinds or turns slowly, pull the roller guide and spin each nylon wheel; a cracked or flat-spotted wheel drags enough to stall the low-power motor. The guide is LG 5889W2A015B. Clean the wheel axles and cavity floor while you're in there.
- If the motor is completely dead but everything else works, check for about 120V at the motor connector during a run (a live circuit — be careful). No voltage there, with good wiring, means the control-board motor circuit failed.
Cleaning, coupler swaps, and roller-guide replacement are easy DIY; a control-board repair is moderate work.
Is an LG microwave turntable repair worth it?#
For a countertop LG, often yes — the motor, coupler, and roller guide are inexpensive parts and easy swaps. On an over-the-range model the labor is higher, and a control board can cost enough that on an older unit you'd weigh it against replacement. Cleaning under the tray weekly and not overloading it (LG models generally top out around 8 to 12 pounds) prevents most failures. For service, book a repair.

LG microwave turntable not turning: frequently asked questions#
My LG microwave turntable turns slowly — is the motor dying?#
Slow rotation with noise usually means roller-guide friction or food debris; slow rotation without noise can mean a weakening motor or low voltage from the board. Clean the system first, then judge the motor.
Does an LG microwave need the turntable to work?#
It will still make heat, but very unevenly, so it's not safe to rely on for reheating or defrosting. Residential LG models need the rotation for even cooking, so it's worth fixing rather than running without it.
The motor hums but the tray won't move — what's wrong?#
Either the motor has seized or demagnetized, or the drive coupler has stripped. Watch the coupler: if it spins and the tray doesn't, replace the coupler; if the coupler itself won't move under a humming motor, replace the motor.
