Most Likely Cause#
A noisy LG microwave is best diagnosed by the kind of noise, because each sound maps to a different part. Loud buzzing or droning during cooking most often points at the magnetron or the inverter that powers it. A grinding or scraping noise usually means the turntable drive under the floor. Rattling and vibration point at loose panels or, on over-the-range units, the mounting and exhaust fan. Sorting your microwave into one of those sound categories is the fastest route to the fix.
First, separate normal from abnormal. Every microwave hums and the cooling fan whirs — that is expected. What you are chasing is a new sound, one that is louder than the unit used to be or clearly mechanical. If the noise is only present while heating and the food still heats, it is usually the high-voltage side; if it happens with the plate turning but no heat, it is usually the turntable.

Buzzing or Droning#
A buzz that grows over time, especially if it comes with slower or uneven heating, points at the magnetron nearing the end of its life or, on inverter models, the inverter board straining. This is the sound to take seriously, because it sits on the high-voltage side of the microwave. It is also the reason the cabinet should never be opened casually — see the safety note below.
Grinding or Scraping#
If the plate turns with a grind or scrape and there is no cooking involved, the turntable drive is almost always the cause. Pull out the glass tray and the roller ring and check for food debris, a cracked roller, or a worn coupler on the motor shaft. Then spin the drive stub by hand; roughness or resistance confirms a worn turntable motor, an inexpensive part to replace.
Rattles and Clicks#
A rattle that changes when you press on the cabinet is a loose panel or, on an over-the-range unit, a loose mount — tightening the screws usually settles it. Repeated clicking that lines up with the microwave switching power levels is normal relay operation; clicking that is constant or erratic can mean a failing relay on the control board.

- Decide whether the noise happens during heating (high-voltage side) or only with the plate turning (turntable).
- Remove the glass tray and roller ring; check for debris and spin the drive by hand.
- Tighten the outer-cabinet and mounting screws to kill rattles.
- Run the vent fan alone on over-the-range units to isolate a fan-bearing whine.
- If a buzz or drone tracks with weaker heating, plan a magnetron or inverter test — not a DIY job.
Safety: never remove the outer cabinet of a microwave to chase an internal noise. The high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge long after the unit is unplugged. Turntable, roller, and external mounting checks are safe from the outside; anything inside the cabinet belongs to a trained technician.
Repair or Replace#
Turntable rollers, couplers, and loose-screw rattles are cheap or free to fix yourself. An exhaust fan motor is a moderate part. A failing magnetron or inverter is the expensive repair, and because it is also the high-voltage side, an older over-the-range microwave with a dying magnetron is often the point where replacement makes more sense than repair. When the noise is on the cooking side, the safe move is to book an inspection rather than open the cabinet yourself.
