The short answer
F9Q1 points at the user interface — the keypad and its board — or the wiring between it and the control. The oven also reports that it could not carry out the function requested, so what you asked for did not happen.

|---|---|
| F9Q1 | The oven could not execute the function. There may a problem with the User Interface (Touch Pad) or the associated wiring. |
What you observe, and what to record
- Keys need a hard press, or respond to the wrong touch — A touch panel that has lost calibration behaves like this before it fails outright.
- How long the ${A} runs before the code appears — Immediately from cold, or well into a session — that interval is the most useful single number you can hand a technician.
- Whether the code is steady or intermittent — A fault that is present every time is far quicker to find than one that comes and goes, and the two are diagnosed differently.
Causes, most likely first on this oven
- A stuck or contaminated key area — First, because it is the commonest and the only one an owner can fix. Cleaner, steam and cooking residue on the panel all register as a press that never ends.
- The ribbon or harness between the interface and the control — Second: the connection runs behind the fascia, is flexed whenever the trim is disturbed, and lives in the heat above the door.
- The interface board itself — Third: it is a real failure mode, but it is a part swap and therefore not something to conclude before the first two are cleared.
Check in this order, and why
- Wipe the panel dry and try every key in turn — A single dead or permanently active key names the fault immediately.
- Cut power and watch the panel come back — How the display starts up says whether it is getting a clean supply.
- Note whether the oven still heats — Heating normally while the panel misbehaves puts the fault squarely on the interface side.
What an owner can safely check
- Power the oven down at the breaker and restore it — The documented first move, and it clears an interface that has locked up rather than failed.
About 5 min
- Photograph the display with the code showing — Codes are easy to transcribe wrongly and a photograph is not. It also timestamps the fault, which matters if it becomes intermittent.
About 5 min
- Copy the full model number from the rating plate — Brand code indexes are shared across model lines, and the model number is what lets the code be read against the right one.
About 10 min
- STOP HERE before the fascia comes off — The interface board and its connector are behind live terminals.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Let the cavity cool completely first: the racks, the door glass and the trim all hold heat for far longer than the display suggests, and the lock will not release above its own threshold anyway.
When to call a technician
Call once the panel is clean and dry and keys are still wrong, or as soon as the oven starts acting on presses nobody made — that is worth taking out of service rather than living with. A technician can tell an interface board from a harness fault with a meter, and the two have very different costs.

What this page does not cover
This page reads F9Q1 for KitchenAid ovens in general, from the manufacturer's shared code index. A code can be documented differently for one family, so where a model-line page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer and is linked below. Not here: wiring colours, connector positions and part numbers, which differ by family.
