The reading in two sentences
Read F2 as this: the indication disappears when the surface cooking area has cooled. The cooktop is in normal use; the indication is information about a hot surface rather than a fault. You can settle whether this is a one-off or a real fault yourself; naming the failed part is not owner work.

| F2 | "F2" will disappear when the surface cooking area has cooled. |
What else is happening when this shows
- It lasts longer after long or high-power cooking — More stored heat takes longer to fall below the threshold.
- The surface is genuinely hot to the touch nearby — The indication is reporting something true, which is the whole purpose of it.
- NEAR MISS — it never clears, even hours later on a cold surface — An indication that will not clear cold is no longer reporting heat, and that is a sensing fault.
What triggers F2, most likely first
- Stored heat in the surface after use — It goes first because it is the published explanation: the indication exists to warn you about a surface that is still hot, and it clears when the surface does.
- A hot pan left standing on the zone — A pan keeps feeding heat back into the glass, so the indication persists long after the zone itself was switched off.
- A sensing fault where the indication never clears — Last: only when the surface is unambiguously cold and the indication is still there does this become a fault rather than information.
The order to work through
- Check the surface with the back of your hand held above the glass — Warmth means the indication is telling the truth.
- Take any pan off and simply wait — An indication that fades is the appliance working correctly.
- Give it time and watch it clear on its own — A falling indication that goes out by itself is the appliance working correctly.
- Body: Remove the heat sources one at a time — pan first, neighbouring zones second, installation third.
The reset and the checks that follow it
- Take the pan off and leave the surface to cool — Nothing on the glass. Then simply wait and watch the indication rather than pressing anything.
About 30 min
- Take the pan off, leave the surface untouched and watch the indication fade — Nothing cold or wet on hot glass: thermal shock is how a cooking surface cracks.
About 30 min
- Check the surface temperature by hand above the glass — Back of the hand, held just above rather than on the surface. Warmth means the indication is correct.
About 2 min
- STOP HERE — the sensing under the glass is not owner-serviceable — Anything under the surface means the appliance open, which is service work.
Before a panel comes off
Safety
Isolate the cooktop at its circuit breaker before any panel comes off — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and this is a fixed high-current appliance rather than one you unplug. Put nothing cold or wet on hot glass. On a gas model, if you smell gas, leave the building and call the gas utility from outside.
Where an owner check ends
Call at once if the glass is cracked, chipped or discoloured, whatever the display is doing. Damaged glass over a heated surface is a safety matter and it does not improve with use.
Other codes on a KitchenAid cooktop
What is deliberately not here
Treat this as the general KitchenAid cooktop reading. It stops short of anything model-specific — part numbers, harness colours, connector layouts and service-mode entry — because those differ by family and a technician takes them from the rating plate rather than from a code. A family- or model-specific page, where one exists, is linked from the code index below and is the closer answer.
