Read the Symptoms#

Decode the Prefix First#

The first three digits of the model number name the builder and fix which valve fits. A 106 prefix is Whirlpool with a dual-solenoid valve using W10 part numbers; a 795 prefix is LG (Kenmore Elite), often with a third solenoid on French-door models with dual ice makers; a 253 prefix is a Frigidaire-based unit and a 401 prefix is Samsung-based. Whichever it is, search the OEM manufacturer's number rather than the Kenmore label to save 30-40% on an identical part.

A Note on 795 Kenmore Elite#

LG-built 795-prefix Kenmore Elite refrigerators deserve a check before any big repair: LG's linear compressor had a known defect that led to extended warranties and a class-action settlement covering many Sears-branded units. If a 795 machine has a compressor fault, confirm whether your serial number is covered before paying out of pocket. These models also carry more electronics than the simpler 106 Whirlpool units, which means higher part costs but richer on-screen error codes.

Check Pressure and Fill Before Replacing#

The valve needs at least 20 psi to open fully; below that the mold underfills and you get small or hollow cubes that mimic a bad valve. Time the dispenser into a measuring cup — about 6 ounces in 10 seconds is healthy, and much slower points at household pressure. You can also watch a fill cycle directly: the ice-maker solenoid opens for roughly 7 seconds and should fill the mold to about 80% in seven or eight seconds. A solenoid that fills slowly makes undersized cubes, while one stuck open overfills and bridges cubes together.

Replacing the Valve#

1. Unplug the refrigerator and shut the water off at the supply valve.
2. Pull the unit out and remove the rear-bottom access panel.
3. Find the valve where the household line (a brass compression fitting) connects, with tubes running up to the ice maker and dispenser.
4. Set towels and a shallow pan, then disconnect the supply line and note-and-disconnect the outlet tubes.
5. Unplug the solenoid connectors, remove the one or two mounting screws, and fit the new valve.
6. Reconnect everything, turn the water on, check for leaks, then restore power and allow a few hours for the first ice batch.

An adjustable wrench, a Phillips #2, pliers, and a shallow pan cover it in well under an hour.

Lifespan and Hard Water#

Kenmore inlet valves last about 6-12 years, and hard water is what shortens them — minerals build up inside the solenoid ports and choke the flow. If your water is hard, an inline sediment filter on the supply line adds years of valve life. Note too that dual-solenoid valves are replaced as a complete assembly; the individual solenoids are not sold separately. If you are on a well or a heavily mineralized municipal supply, expect the shorter end of that range; an annual look at the inlet screen and the household shutoff keeps small problems from being mistaken for a failed valve.
