A cycle that stops in the first part is usually about the latch. One that stops later is usually about temperature, and heavy soiling is the commonest reason a cavity runs hotter than the cycle expects. Scraping out loose debris before cleaning is not fussiness: it is what keeps the cycle within the range it was designed for.

- A great deal of loose debris was in the cavity — The commonest reason a cleaning cycle overheats and abandons itself.

- The oven works normally for cooking afterwards — Reassuring, and it means nothing has been damaged.
- NEAR MISS: a cycle that finishes and leaves ash — Normal; ash is what the cycle produces and it is wiped out afterwards.

- Heavy soiling — First. Loose debris burns rather than merely carbonising, which produces extra heat the cycle has to absorb and often cannot.
- The latch not confirming — Second, and it stops the cycle in its first minutes because nothing proceeds until the door is locked.
- Restricted ventilation around the housing — Third. A built-in oven cleaning itself in a blocked housing overheats its own surroundings.
- A sensor or control fault — Last, and it is what remains once the cavity is clean and the latch works.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any cover, and let the cavity cool completely first. Never force a locked door. Ventilate the kitchen during cleaning, and keep birds out of the room entirely, as fumes from a cleaning cycle can affect them. Stop at once if you smell hot plastic rather than burning residue.
When to call
Call if the cycle stops in its first minutes with a clean cavity, since the latch is then the suspect. Call if the appliance also misbehaves during ordinary cooking. Call immediately for hot plastic smells or a tripping breaker. Say how far into the cycle it stopped: early and late failures have entirely different causes.
