Check what the other cavity is doing
Before treating a refusal as a fault, look at the other oven. A cleaning cycle running there, a delayed start pending, or a high-temperature function in progress can each block the cavity you are trying to use. Cancel everything in both, let the appliance settle, and try again with only one function selected.
What you find
- One cavity refuses while the other works — The signature of a rule rather than a failure, since the shared parts clearly work.
- A cleaning cycle is running or pending in the other cavity — The commonest single block, and it lasts for hours.
- Both cavities refuse at once — That points at the shared control or supply rather than a rule.
- A function is accepted and then cancelled a moment later — The control applying a rule after the selection is made.
- The refusal happens only with high-temperature functions — Consistent with a limit on combined use rather than a fault.
- NEAR MISS: a longer preheat when both cavities are in use — Expected; they share a supply and a cooling system.
Ranked for a double appliance
- A cleaning cycle in the other cavity — First. It locks out most other functions for its whole duration, which is hours rather than minutes.
- A combination the control refuses — Second. Certain high-temperature functions cannot run together, and the refusal is silent rather than explained.
- A pending delayed start — Third. A programme waiting in one cavity can block the other without anything visible happening.
- A shared control or supply fault — Last, and it is indicated when both cavities refuse together.
Look at both cavities, then clear both
- Check what the other cavity is doing or waiting to do — The top cause, free, and frequently the whole answer.
- Cancel every programme in both cavities — It returns the appliance to a known state.
- Try one function alone in the cavity you want — It tests without any rule being able to interfere.
- Treat both cavities refusing as a shared fault — That is a different and more serious finding.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any cover; a double oven is usually hardwired, so the breaker is the isolation point. Let both cavities cool completely first. Never force a locked door on a cavity that has been cleaning, and stop at once if you smell burning or the breaker trips.
When to call
Call if one cavity still refuses with everything cleared in both and the appliance cool. Call promptly if both refuse together, since that points at the shared control or supply. Say which cavity fails and what the other was doing: on a double appliance that pair of facts is most of the diagnosis.
