Kenmore Dryer No Heat or Not Enough Heat — Troubleshooting Guide
A Kenmore dryer that tumbles but produces no heat — or runs significantly cooler than it should — is the most common dryer complaint we service. The heating system architecture is completely different across Kenmore platforms, and even within the 110-series, electric and gas models have distinct failure modes. Identifying your platform and fuel type is the essential first step.
Platform and Fuel Type Matrix
| Model prefix | OEM | Electric heating system | Gas heating system |
|---|---|---|---|
| 110 | Whirlpool | Coil heating element (rear access) | Gas burner with igniter + gas valve coils |
| 796 | LG | Coil heating element (front/lower access) | Gas burner with igniter + gas valve coils |
| 417 | Electrolux | Coil heating element | Gas burner (less common in Kenmore-branded) |

Electric Kenmore Dryers — No Heat
Heating Element Burned Out (40% of Electric Cases)
The heating element is a coiled resistance wire inside a metal housing. It glows red-hot during operation and generates the heat that dries clothes. Over time, the wire develops thin spots and eventually breaks, creating an open circuit — no heat at all.
Diagnosis: Unplug the dryer, access the heating element (rear panel on 110-series, lower front on 796-series), disconnect one wire, and test with a multimeter for continuity. No continuity = burned out.
110-Series (Whirlpool): Element part 279838 — a cylindrical coil assembly accessed by removing the rear panel (4 screws). This is one of the most commonly replaced dryer parts in existence.
796-Series (LG): Element part 5301EL1001J — a larger flat-style element assembly accessed from the front lower panel.
Parts Cost: $25–$80 (OEM element) Professional Repair Cost: $130–$250
Thermal Fuse Blown (25% of Electric Cases)
The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device that blows when the dryer overheats, permanently cutting power to the heating element (on some models, cutting power to the entire dryer). A blown thermal fuse is always a symptom of another problem — typically a restricted vent.
Critical: After replacing the thermal fuse, you must clean the vent system. If you replace the fuse without fixing the vent restriction, the new fuse will blow again within weeks.
110-Series: Thermal fuse 3392519 — located on the blower housing. 796-Series: Thermal fuse 6931EL3003D — located on the heater housing.
Parts Cost: $5–$15 Professional Repair Cost: $85–$165
240V Power Issue — Half Voltage (10% of Electric Cases)
Electric dryers require 240V from a double-pole 30-amp breaker. If one leg of the breaker trips (or a wire connection fails at the outlet), the dryer receives only 120V. At 120V, the motor runs and the drum turns, but the heating element cannot generate heat. The dryer appears to "work" but clothes never dry.
Diagnosis: Use a multimeter to test voltage at the dryer outlet. You should read 240V across the two hot terminals. If you read 120V, check the breaker (reset both poles) and inspect the outlet wiring.
Parts Cost: $0 (breaker reset) or $5–$20 (outlet repair) Professional Repair Cost: $80–$150 (electrician)
Gas Kenmore Dryers — No Heat
Gas Valve Coils Failed (35% of Gas Cases)
Gas dryers use electromagnetic coils on the gas valve to open the valve and allow gas to flow to the burner. These coils weaken with heat cycling over thousands of dryer loads. The classic symptom: the igniter glows, gas ignites briefly, then the flame goes out after 2–3 seconds and does not relight. This happens because the coils generate enough force to open the valve initially but cannot hold it open.
110-Series (Whirlpool): Gas valve coil set 279834 — contains 2 or 3 coils depending on model. Replace the entire set even if only one has failed.
Parts Cost: $15–$40 (coil set) Professional Repair Cost: $120–$220
Igniter Failure (25% of Gas Cases)
The flat igniter (glow-bar type on all Kenmore gas dryers) heats to approximately 2,500 degrees F to ignite the gas. When it weakens (draws less current), it may glow but not get hot enough to open the safety circuit that enables gas flow. Or it may crack and fail completely.
Diagnosis: Watch the igniter through the lower front access panel. If it glows bright orange for more than 90 seconds without gas igniting, it is weak. If it does not glow at all, it is open-circuit.
Parts Cost: $20–$50 (igniter) Professional Repair Cost: $120–$230
Flame Sensor Failure (15% of Gas Cases)
The flame sensor monitors burner operation. If it fails, the control board does not detect flame and shuts off gas as a safety measure, even when the burner is functioning.
Parts Cost: $10–$30 Professional Repair Cost: $100–$180

Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Reduced Heat (Dryer Runs but Takes Forever)
If the dryer heats but not enough:
- Clogged vent — the #1 cause of reduced drying performance across all platforms. Clean from dryer to exterior cap.
- Partially failed element — on rare occasions, a heating element can short against its housing, causing it to operate at reduced output.
- Cycling thermostat out of calibration — cutting heat off too early. Replace the cycling thermostat.
