Kenmore Dryer Drum Not Turning — Troubleshooting Guide
When a Kenmore dryer runs but the drum does not spin, the cause is almost always mechanical — a broken belt, seized roller, or failed motor. The specific components and their part numbers depend on your Kenmore platform: 110-series (Whirlpool-built), 796-series (LG-built), or 417-series (Electrolux-built). Each uses a different belt routing, different drum support system, and different motor configuration.
Quick Diagnostic: Motor Running or Silent?
Before opening anything, listen when you press Start:
| What you hear | Likely cause | Platform notes |
|---|---|---|
| Motor hums but drum does not move | Broken drive belt | All platforms — most common |
| Motor hums, then stops after a few seconds | Seized drum (roller or bearing) — motor thermal overload trips | 110-series most common |
| Nothing at all — no sound | Electrical issue (not a drum problem) — see "won't start" guide | All platforms |
| Squealing or grinding before drum stopped | Idler pulley or roller failure preceded belt break | 110-series, 796-series |
Quick test: Open the dryer door and try to rotate the drum by hand. If it spins freely, the belt is broken. If it resists or makes grinding noises, a roller or bearing has seized.

Broken Drive Belt — The #1 Cause (50% of All Cases)
The drive belt is the single most common reason a Kenmore dryer drum stops turning. It is a long, thin flat belt that wraps around the drum, loops through an idler pulley for tension, and connects to the motor pulley. When the belt snaps, the motor runs but nothing drives the drum.
110-Series (Whirlpool Platform)
- Belt part: Whirlpool 341241 (93.5-inch, flat, 4-rib)
- Belt routes around the drum, under the idler pulley (spring-loaded), and around the motor pulley
- Access: remove the top panel (2–3 screws at rear) and front panel, or access from the rear depending on model year
796-Series (LG Platform)
- Belt part: LG 4681EL1008A (same belt used in LG-branded dryers)
- Similar routing to Whirlpool but the idler pulley is on the opposite side
- Access: remove the top panel and front panel assembly
417-Series (Electrolux Platform)
- Belt part: Electrolux 134503600
- Different belt profile — slightly wider than Whirlpool/LG
- Access: typically from the front after removing the lower access panel
Parts Cost: $8–$25 (belt only — always buy OEM, not Kenmore-branded) Professional Repair Cost: $100–$200
Repair procedure (110-series):
- Unplug the dryer.
- Remove the lint filter and the 2 screws beneath it.
- Release the top panel clips with a putty knife at the front corners, then lift the top.
- Disconnect the door switch wiring and remove the front panel (4–6 screws).
- Photograph the belt routing before removing the old belt fragments.
- Loop the new belt around the drum (ribbed side against the drum).
- Thread under the idler pulley and around the motor pulley — the idler provides tension.
- Rotate the drum by hand to verify the belt tracks straight.
Seized Drum Support Rollers (25% of Cases)
110-Series Rollers
Whirlpool-platform dryers use 2 rear drum support rollers (some models have 2 additional front rollers). These rollers ride on shafts and support the weight of the drum. When bearings inside the rollers seize, the drum cannot rotate even with a good belt — the motor thermal overload will trip within seconds.
Diagnosis: With the belt removed, try to spin the drum. If it drags, spin each roller individually. A seized roller will not spin freely on its shaft.
Parts Cost: $15–$40 (roller kit — Whirlpool 349241T, replace all at once) Professional Repair Cost: $150–$280
796-Series Rollers
LG-platform dryers use 2 rear rollers (LG 4581EL2002C). Same diagnostic approach — replace both simultaneously.
Parts Cost: $20–$50 (roller pair) Professional Repair Cost: $150–$300
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Idler Pulley Failure (15% of Cases)
The idler pulley maintains belt tension. When its bearing seizes or the bracket breaks, belt tension is lost and the drum stops (even though the belt may still be intact). On 110-series dryers, the idler pulley is Whirlpool 279640. On 796-series, it is LG 4561EL3002A.

Motor Failure (10% of Cases)
If the drum is free, the belt is intact, and the motor hums but the shaft does not rotate, the motor has seized internally. This is less common than belt or roller failure but does occur in dryers over 10 years old.
Parts Cost: $80–$200 (motor — platform-specific) Professional Repair Cost: $200–$400

Always Replace as a Kit
When replacing a broken belt, best practice is to replace the belt, idler pulley, and drum rollers together. These are wear items that age at the same rate — if the belt broke, the rollers and pulley are near the end of their life. Combination kits for 110-series (Whirlpool maintenance kit) typically cost $30–$60 and save a second repair visit.
