Kenmore Dryer Display Not Working — Troubleshooting Guide
A blank or malfunctioning display on a Kenmore dryer is a platform-specific problem. The 110-series (Whirlpool-built) dryers with electronic controls, 796-series (LG-built), and 417-series (Electrolux-built) each use completely different control boards, display technologies, and wiring harnesses. Older 110-series models with mechanical timers have no display at all — if yours is one of these, skip to the "no indicator lights" section.
Identify Your Display Type by Model Prefix
| Model prefix | Display type | Board location | Common display failure |
|---|---|---|---|
| 110.6xxxx (older) | No display — mechanical timer + indicator lights only | Behind control panel | Burned-out indicator bulbs |
| 110.7xxxx / 110.8xxxx | LED segment or LCD panel | Behind control panel, user interface board | Ribbon cable connection |
| 796.xxxxx (LG) | LED segment display with touch controls | Behind front panel, split main + display board | Display board flex cable |
| 417.xxxxx (Electrolux) | LCD with IQ-Touch interface | Behind console panel | Display board capacitor failure |

Quick Reset Before Any Diagnosis
Across all electronic Kenmore dryers, power-cycle first: unplug the dryer (or flip the circuit breaker) for 60 seconds, then restore power. On 796-series LG-platform models, hold the Power button for 5 seconds after reconnecting. This clears temporary control board glitches that can blank the display without any hardware failure.
If the display comes back after reset but fails again within days, you likely have a loose wiring connection or an intermittent board fault — not a dead display.
Kenmore 110-Series (Whirlpool Platform) Display Issues
User Interface Board Failure (35% of electronic 110-series cases)
Whirlpool-platform Kenmore dryers with electronic controls use a separate user interface (UI) board behind the control panel. This board drives the display and receives button inputs. It connects to the main control board via a ribbon cable or wire harness. When the UI board fails, the display goes blank but the dryer may still run if you press start — indicating the main board is functional but the display circuit is dead.
Diagnosis: If the dryer runs but the display is blank, the UI board or its connection is the problem. If nothing happens at all — no lights, no response — check incoming power first (240V at the outlet for electric dryers).
Parts Cost: $80–$180 (UI board, Whirlpool-specific to model) Professional Repair Cost: $180–$320
Ribbon Cable or Connector Corrosion (20% of cases)
The flat ribbon cable connecting the UI board to the main board can work loose from vibration, or its contacts can corrode in humid laundry rooms. This causes intermittent display flickering or partial segments missing.
Fix: Remove the control panel (usually 2–3 screws at the rear), locate the ribbon cable, unplug it, clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner, and reseat firmly.
Parts Cost: $0 (cleaning/reseating) Professional Repair Cost: $80–$120
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Kenmore 796-Series (LG Platform) Display Issues
Display Board Flex Cable Failure (40% of 796-series cases)
LG-platform Kenmore dryers use a flex cable between the display board and the main control board. This cable is a known weak point on LG dryer platforms — it runs through a hinge point where vibration and heat cause metal fatigue in the traces. Symptoms include a display that works intermittently, shows scrambled segments, or goes completely dark.
Diagnosis: Open the top panel and locate the flex cable running from the front display board to the main board at the rear. Look for visible cracks, burns, or discoloration on the cable. Gently press on the cable connections at both ends — if the display flickers on when you press, the cable or its connector is the fault.
Parts Cost: $20–$50 (flex cable assembly) Professional Repair Cost: $120–$200
Main Control Board Power Section (25% of cases)
If no LEDs illuminate at all on a 796-series (no display, no indicator lights, dryer completely unresponsive), the power supply section of the main control board may have failed. These boards use capacitors and voltage regulators that degrade over time, especially in homes with inconsistent power quality.
Parts Cost: $130–$260 (main control board) Professional Repair Cost: $230–$400
Kenmore 417-Series (Electrolux Platform) Display Issues
IQ-Touch Display Board Capacitor Failure (35% of 417-series cases)
Electrolux-platform dryers with the IQ-Touch interface are known for capacitor failure on the display board. The electrolytic capacitors in the power section of the display board dry out over time (especially in warm laundry rooms), causing the display to dim, flicker, or go completely dark. The dryer motor and heating system may still function normally.
Parts Cost: $100–$220 (display board) Professional Repair Cost: $200–$360

No Power At All — Check Before Blaming the Display
Before assuming a display failure, verify the dryer is receiving power:
- Check the outlet — electric dryers require 240V from a dedicated 30-amp circuit. Use a multimeter to test voltage at the outlet, or plug in a known working 240V appliance.
- Check the circuit breaker — dryers use a double-pole breaker. If one pole trips, you may have 120V (enough to light some indicators but not run the dryer). Reset the breaker fully off, then on.
- Check the power cord — on 110-series dryers, the power cord terminal block inside the rear access panel can loosen over time, especially if the dryer has been moved. Tighten all terminal screws.
- Check the door switch — some Kenmore dryers will not illuminate the display unless the door switch registers as closed. Test the door switch with a multimeter for continuity when pressed.

When to Call a Professional
Display board replacement on any platform requires accessing the control panel, disconnecting multiple wire harnesses, and correctly matching the replacement board to your specific model number. Incorrect board installation can damage other components. If you are not comfortable working with electronics, professional diagnosis is recommended — especially for 796-series and 417-series models where the display and main boards communicate via digital protocol.
