The short answer
C82 reports that the pan is not the right size for the cooking area. On an induction top the zone measures what is sitting on it, and a pan that is too small, off-centre or has a base that does not sit flat reads as no usable load. The cooktop is not faulty; it is declining to put power into something it cannot couple to.

| C82 | Pan/pot is not the right size. |
What you observe, and what to record
- The zone refuses to start with a pan on it — The pan is there and the cooktop does not agree that it is.
- Whether the display shows anything besides the code — A second code, a flashing indicator or a missing segment is information the code number alone does not carry.
- Whether the code followed any recent work — An installation, a service visit, plumbing or electrical work: anything done near the appliance in the weeks before is worth mentioning.
Causes, most likely first on this cooktop
- The pan base is smaller than the zone needs — First, because it is what the code says and it is easy to do accidentally — a small milk pan on a large zone is the classic case.
- The pan is off-centre — Second: the coil senses through the middle of the zone, and a pan pushed to one side presents much less base than it looks like it does.
- A warped or domed base — Third: a pan that rocks has a small contact area even when its diameter is right, and heating and cooling cycles are what warp bases.
Check in this order, and why
- Try a pan you know works on the same zone — One swap settles pan-versus-cooktop entirely, and it takes a moment.
- Centre the pan properly and retry — Free, and it is often the whole answer.
- Put a magnet on the base of the pan that fails — A weak grip explains a lot at no cost.
What an owner can safely check
- Centre the pan on the zone and retry — Properly centred, not roughly placed.
About 5 min
- Find the manual, or download it for your model number — Model-line documentation frequently says something the general code index does not.
About 10 min
- Try the same pan on a smaller zone — A pan too small for a large zone frequently works perfectly on a small one.
About 5 min
- Check whether the appliance is still in warranty — Worth two minutes before anyone is paid: the purchase date and the model number decide it, and some components carry longer cover than the appliance.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not pour water onto hot glass to cool it and do not work on a top that is still warm: thermal shock cracks a ceramic surface, and a cracked top takes the whole appliance out of service.
When to call a technician
Call only if a pan that is flat, well sized and strongly magnetic still produces this code on one particular zone while working on the others. That combination points at the zone's sensing rather than the pan, which is a technician's job. Anything that varies with the pan is a pan question.

What this page does not cover
This page reads C82 for Jenn-Air cooktops in general, from the manufacturer's shared code index. A code can be documented differently for one family, so where a model-line page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer and is linked below. Not here: wiring colours, connector positions and part numbers, which differ by family.
