How to Replace a Bosch Dryer Drive Belt
The drive belt on Bosch dryers wraps around the drum circumference and connects to the motor via an idler pulley. When it breaks, the motor runs (you hear humming) but the drum does not spin. A worn belt may cause squealing or slow drum rotation before it snaps completely.
Before You Start
- Tools needed: Torx T20 screwdriver, flathead screwdriver (for idler spring)
- Parts needed: Bosch dryer belt (model-specific flat belt)
- Time required: 30-45 minutes
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Safety warning: Unplug the dryer. Wait 5 minutes for inverter capacitor discharge on heat pump models.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Access the Belt
Remove top panel (2 Torx T20 at rear, slide back). Remove right side panel (3-4 Torx T20 at rear edge, slide back, pull away). The belt, drum, motor pulley, and idler pulley are now visible.
Step 2: Release Tension and Remove Old Belt
The spring-loaded idler pulley maintains belt tension. Push the idler arm to release tension. Slip the belt off the motor pulley, then off the drum. If the belt is broken, remove both halves.
Step 3: Route the New Belt
Place the new belt around the drum circumference (flat side against drum, ribbed side outward on ribbed belts). Then route it: from the drum, under the idler pulley, and around the motor pulley. Release the idler — spring tension automatically takes up slack.
Verify the belt sits flat in the drum groove with no twists. A twisted belt wears rapidly and can slip off.
Step 4: Test
Spin the drum by hand — should rotate with slight resistance. Reinstall panels. Restore power. Run a timed dry cycle. The drum should spin smoothly and quietly at consistent speed.
Troubleshooting
- Belt slips off during test: Routing is wrong (twist in belt) or belt is wrong size for your model.
- Squealing with new belt: Idler pulley bearing may be worn — spin it by hand to check. Replace if grinding.
- Motor hums but drum still doesn't spin: Belt not properly seated on motor pulley. Recheck routing.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

FAQ
Q: How do I know the belt is broken vs motor failure? A: Start a cycle. If you hear the motor hum but the drum stays still, the belt is broken. If no motor sound at all, the motor or its control has failed.
Q: How long does a dryer belt last? A: 6-10 years. Overloading the dryer accelerates wear. Replace proactively if you notice squealing or see cracks.
Q: Can I use a universal belt? A: Use the exact specification belt for your model (width, length, rib count). Universal belts may not fit the pulley grooves correctly.
Q: Do Bosch heat pump dryers have belts? A: Yes — both heat pump (WTW) and condenser (WTG) models use drive belts. Only the heat source differs, not the drum drive mechanism.
