How to Remove an LG Washing Machine: Safe Disconnection and Moving Guide
Removing an LG washing machine requires specific steps to protect both the machine and your home. LG front-load washers weigh between 180-220 pounds due to the concrete counterweights and Inverter Direct Drive motor assembly. The Direct Drive design means there is no belt or external motor hanging below — the weight is concentrated around the drum. Improper removal risks water damage from undraining hoses, floor damage from the heavy unit, and internal drum damage if transport bolts are not reinstalled.
This guide covers the complete removal process from disconnection through moving. Whether you are removing the machine for repair access, replacement, or relocation, following these steps protects both the appliance and your home.
Before You Start
- Tools needed: Adjustable wrench or pliers (for hose connections), Phillips #2 screwdriver, towels (multiple), shallow pan or bucket, appliance dolly, transport bolts (came with machine — check behind the rear panel or in the original packaging)
- Supplies needed: Thread seal tape (if reconnecting elsewhere), zip ties
- Time required: 30-45 minutes
- Difficulty: Beginner (but requires physical strength or a helper)
- Safety warning: Disconnect power first. Turn off water supply valves completely. LG front-load washers are very heavy — use proper lifting technique or an appliance dolly. Never move with water still inside.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Run a Drain Cycle
Before disconnecting anything, ensure the machine is completely empty of water. Run a quick Spin Only cycle (or Drain and Spin) with the door empty. This evacuates water from the tub, pump, and internal hoses. After the cycle completes, open the drain pump filter (lower-left service panel) slightly to verify no water remains. Catch any remaining water in the shallow pan.
If the machine will not power on or run a cycle, drain manually through the drain pump filter by slowly unscrewing it with towels positioned underneath.
Step 2: Disconnect Power
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. If the outlet is behind the machine and inaccessible, turn off the circuit breaker serving that outlet. Coil the power cord loosely and secure it to the back of the machine with a zip tie to prevent it from dragging during moving.
Step 3: Disconnect Water Supply Hoses
Turn off both hot and cold water supply valves at the wall (turn clockwise until fully closed). Place towels under the connections. Using an adjustable wrench, loosen the hose coupling nuts at the machine end (not the wall end). Turn counterclockwise. Water will drip from the hoses — direct them into the pan.
Once disconnected from the machine, hold each hose end above the valve to prevent siphoning. If you need to disconnect from the wall valves as well, close the valves fully and then disconnect. Cap exposed wall connections with threaded caps to prevent accidental valve opening from causing a flood.
Step 4: Disconnect the Drain Hose
The drain hose on LG washers exits from the rear, typically on the lower-left side. It routes to either a standpipe (vertical pipe in the wall), a laundry sink, or a direct wall connection. Pull the drain hose out of its connection point. Hold it elevated until you can lower it into a bucket — it contains residual water between the machine and wherever it was routed.
Secure the drain hose to the back of the machine with a zip tie for transport.
Step 5: Install Transport Bolts (Critical for LG Front-Loaders)
LG front-load washing machines have a suspended drum system designed to absorb vibration during operation. When moving the machine, this suspension allows the drum to swing freely and bang against the outer tub, potentially damaging the shock absorbers, suspension springs, or the tub itself.
The transport bolts lock the drum in a fixed position for safe moving. LG provides 4 transport bolts (sometimes 3 on smaller models) with the original purchase. They install through holes in the rear panel. Remove the plastic plug from each transport bolt hole (Phillips screwdriver to pry the plugs out), then thread each bolt in by hand and tighten with the included wrench until the bolt head is flush. You should feel the bolt engaging the drum bracket inside.
If you do not have the original transport bolts, you can order replacements from LG (check your model number for the correct bolt size). Moving without transport bolts risks costly internal damage.
Step 6: Slide the Machine Out
LG front-load washers sit on anti-vibration feet that grip the floor. Place a piece of cardboard or thin plywood in front of the machine to protect the floor surface. Rock the machine slightly to the left and slide a small piece of cardboard under the right front foot. Then rock right and slide cardboard under the left foot. Now the machine will slide forward on the cardboard without damaging your floor.
Pull the machine straight forward until you have full access to the rear for hose and cord management. If the space is too tight to pull forward, you may need to disconnect hoses from the wall side first.
Step 7: Move with an Appliance Dolly
LG front-load washers are too heavy to carry safely. Use an appliance dolly (hand truck with straps). Tip the machine slightly back and slide the dolly plate underneath the front. Strap the machine to the dolly at mid-height. Keep the machine upright during transport — do not lay it on its side or back, as residual water can reach the control board.
If you must transport in a vehicle, secure the machine upright with the transport bolts installed. If it absolutely must lay down, place it on the rear panel (back) side — never on the door side, as the door glass can crack under the machine's weight.
Step 8: Top-Load Specific Removal (WT Series)
LG top-load washers are lighter (120-160 pounds) and do not require transport bolts for most models, as their tub suspension system has less free travel. However, they are taller and top-heavy. When using a dolly, strap higher on the unit and tip carefully. Disconnect in the same order: drain cycle, power, water supply, drain hose.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
If you encounter problems during removal:
- Water supply valve will not close fully: if the valve leaks when you try to disconnect the hose, do not force it. Turn off the main house water supply and then disconnect. Plan to replace the faulty valve
- Drain hose is glued or cemented into standpipe: gently twist and pull. If it will not release, cut the hose at the machine end (you can replace the hose at the new location)
- Machine will not slide — feet are stuck: the rubber leveling feet may have bonded to vinyl or tile flooring over years. Rock the machine side to side to break the bond, or slide a thin putty knife under each foot
- Transport bolt holes are rusted over: use penetrating oil (WD-40 or PB Blaster) and wait 10 minutes before attempting to thread the bolts. Clean the threads with a wire brush if needed
- No transport bolts available: wrap a moving blanket around the drum by opening the door and stuffing blankets tightly to minimize drum movement. Move very carefully over smooth surfaces only

When to Call a Professional
Hire professional movers or appliance installers if:
- The machine must navigate stairs — a 200-pound washer on stairs is extremely dangerous without proper equipment and training
- The floor path has tight turns that require tipping the machine at angles
- You are physically unable to safely handle the weight even with a dolly
- The water supply valves are seized and you cannot shut off the water without a plumber

FAQ
Q: What happens if I move my LG front-load washer without transport bolts? A: The inner drum will swing on its suspension springs and bang against the outer tub during transport. This can crack the outer tub, bend the shock absorber mounts, detach suspension springs, or damage the spider arm. Repair costs from transport damage range from $200-600. Always install transport bolts or tightly pack the drum interior with blankets.
Q: Can I lay my LG washer on its side during transport? A: LG recommends transporting upright only. If you must lay it down, place it on the rear panel (back side) only, never on the door side. Even on its back, residual water can reach the control board. Ensure the machine is fully drained and transport bolts are installed.
Q: Do I need to disconnect the stacking kit when removing a stacked LG washer? A: Yes. The LG stacking bracket bolts to both the washer top and dryer base. Remove the dryer first (it is lighter, around 120-140 lbs). The stacking bracket stays attached to whichever unit it releases from more easily, then you remove it separately.
Q: How much does an LG front-load washing machine weigh? A: Most LG front-load washers weigh 180-220 pounds (82-100 kg) due to the concrete counterweight blocks inside. The WM series models with larger capacity (5.0+ cu ft) tend toward the heavier end. This weight makes a dolly or two-person lifting mandatory for safe removal.
