- A seized blower or an object jamming the drum — Produces a hum and a stall, and sometimes a smell with it.
- Heat concentrated around the component with the least clearance — A full mechanism in a small cabinet leaves some parts with almost no air around them, and those run hottest and age first.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside. A standard household branch circuit is fifteen or twenty amps and a dryer usually has a heavier circuit of its own; a breaker that trips twice is reporting a fault and should not be reset again. Never bypass a door switch to make a dryer run — it is what stops the drum when the door opens.
