The short answer
On a GE washer, water arriving on the floor most often comes down to a loose or perished hose fitting. GE washers use a lid lock and a pressure-sensing level system, and between them they cover most start and fill complaints. The first check below needs no tools, and the list stops where a meter on live terminals begins.
What you observe
- Water on the floor at the front during the wash — Usually the door seal or the dispenser.
- Water at the back of the machine only — A hose or a fitting rather than the drum.
- A leak that only appears during drain or spin — Timing narrows the source better than looking does.
- NEAR MISS — water standing inside the drum — That is a drainage fault and a different page.
Causes, most likely first on a GE washer
- Loose or perished hose fitting — Ranked first here: supply hoses are under mains pressure at all times and their washers perish.
- Too much detergent or the wrong kind — Ranked second: foam escapes past seals that are in perfect condition.
- Drain hose loose at the standpipe — Last on this list: a hose that jumps out of the standpipe under pump pressure empties onto the floor.
Check in this order, and why
- Dry the fittings, lay kitchen paper under them and run a cycle — Paper finds a weep the eye misses. First: likeliest cause, least effort.
- Look through the door for foam standing above the water — Foam rather than water is the answer. Second: it separates the next two causes.
- Watch the standpipe while the machine pumps out — A hose jumping or backing up is visible immediately. Third: only once the checks above are clean.
What an owner can safely check
- Close the taps, check each hose washer and refit hand-tight plus a nip — Perished washers are the commonest single cause here.
Tools: pliers, towelsAbout 25 min
- Inspect the hoses for bulges or crazing along their length — A bulging supply hose is a burst waiting to happen.
Tools: torchAbout 10 min
- Run a rinse-and-spin with no detergent and watch the floor — A dry floor on that cycle proves the chemistry.
Tools: noneAbout 30 min
- Secure the drain hose to the standpipe so it cannot jump out — Do not seal it airtight: it needs to vent.
Tools: cable tieAbout 15 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals — That is where an owner check ends and a service call begins.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.
When to call a technician
Call once the hoses, the door seal and the detergent dose are all cleared and it still leaks, because a leak from under the drum means the machine comes apart. Call immediately if the machine trips its breaker or water is reaching a socket.

What this page does not cover
This page covers GE washers as a class, not one family or model line. It reasons from how GE builds this appliance — enough to rank the causes, not enough for wiring colours, torque figures or part numbers, which differ by family. Where a model-specific page exists it is linked here and is the better answer; this class page has no such child yet, so nothing is withheld by omission.
