The short answer
On a GE washer, a drum still full at the end of the cycle most often comes down to a kinked or blocked drain hose. GE washers use a lid lock and a pressure-sensing level system, and between them they cover most start and fill complaints. The first check below needs no tools, and the list stops where a meter on live terminals begins.
What you observe
- The drum is full of water at the end of the cycle — The defining symptom, and it is a drain path question.
- The machine hums at the point it should pump out — The pump is energised and moving nothing.
- It drains but will not spin — Most machines refuse to spin until the water has gone.
- NEAR MISS — water is on the floor rather than in the drum — That is a leak and a different page.
Causes, most likely first on a GE washer
- Kinked or blocked drain hose — Ranked first here: the hose is crushed every time the machine is pushed back against the wall.
- Object jamming the drain pump — Ranked second: a coin or an underwire in the impeller gives a hum and no flow.
- Standpipe blocked or the wrong height — Last on this list: the machine can only pump as high as it was designed to, and it cannot pump into a blocked pipe.
Check in this order, and why
- Ease the machine forward and look at the hose route — Any sharp fold is the fault. First: likeliest cause, least effort.
- Listen at the drain step for a hum with no flow — Hum without flow is a jam, not a failure. Second: it separates the next two causes.
- Watch the standpipe while the machine pumps out — Water rising in it is the answer. Third: only once the checks above are clean.
What an owner can safely check
- Pull the machine forward carefully and straighten the drain hose — Watch the supply hoses: they are short.

- Check the hose is not pushed too far down the standpipe — Too deep and the machine siphons instead of draining.
Tools: noneAbout 10 min
- With the power off, turn the pump impeller by hand through the filter opening — It should spin freely; resistance means an obstruction.
Tools: gloves, torchAbout 15 min
- Watch the standpipe during a drain and note whether it backs up — Separates a house drain problem from a machine fault.

- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals — That is where an owner check ends and a service call begins.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.
When to call a technician
Call once the filter, the hoses and the load itself have all been cleared and the fault is unchanged, because the next tests are on live terminals beside standing water. Call immediately if the machine trips its breaker, if you smell hot insulation, or if water is reaching the floor around a live appliance.

What this page does not cover
This page covers GE washers as a class, not one family or model line. It reasons from how GE builds this appliance — enough to rank the causes, not enough for wiring colours, torque figures or part numbers, which differ by family. Where a model-specific page exists it is linked here and is the better answer; this class page has no such child yet, so nothing is withheld by omission.
