Test the dispenser first
If the water dispenser gives a normal flow, water is reaching the appliance and the problem is between the valve and the mould. If the dispenser is also weak or dry, the problem is upstream and the filter or the supply valve is the likely answer. That one test splits the whole page in half and takes a glass.
What you observe
- The mould is completely dry and no ice has formed — Nothing is arriving, which is a supply question rather than a freezing one.
- The water dispenser is slow or gives nothing — The supply side is compromised before the ice maker is even reached.
- The dispenser flows normally but no ice appears — Water reaches the cabinet and stops somewhere between the valve and the mould.
- A thin rod of ice sits in the fill tube — The classic frozen fill tube, which stops the water at the last few centimetres of its journey.
- The ice maker clicks on a schedule and nothing happens — It is cycling and calling for water that never arrives, which is consistent with everything above.
- NEAR MISS: cubes form but are hollow or small — That is a partial flow, and it points at pressure rather than at a complete blockage.
Ranked along the water path
- A filter overdue for replacement — First, because it is a consumable with a defined life, because a clogged one restricts both the dispenser and the ice maker, and because it is the only part on this list an owner can change.
- A partly closed supply valve behind the appliance — Second. It is often nudged when the refrigerator is moved for cleaning, and it reduces flow without stopping it entirely.
- A frozen fill tube — Third. It stops the ice maker while leaving the dispenser perfectly normal, which is a clean and recognisable split.
- The inlet solenoid valve — Last. It is a real failure and the only one that needs the appliance moved and the water isolated.
Split the problem, then walk the path
- Fill a glass from the dispenser and judge the flow — It divides the problem in half immediately and needs nothing but a glass.
- Check the filter date and change it if it is overdue — The top cause, and the only part on the path that is designed to be replaced by the owner.
- Check the supply valve behind the cabinet is fully open — Second cause, and it is often the result of the appliance having been moved.
- Look at the fill tube where it enters the freezer — A rod of ice there explains no ice alongside a perfect dispenser.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and note that a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Isolate the water supply before anything on the water path is disturbed, and have towels ready. A refrigerator is heavy and its water line is short, so pull it out only as far as the line allows and never work on the sealed system.
When to call
Call once the filter is new, the supply valve is open and the dispenser flows normally but no ice appears, because the fill tube and the inlet valve are then the candidates and both need the appliance worked on. Call promptly if you find water on the floor behind the cabinet, since a leaking valve is both a water problem and an electrical one.
