The short answer

On a gas dryer, if you smell gas, leave the building and call the utility from outside.
When to call a technician
Call once the breaker is proven, the door catch is clean, the belt is intact and the machine still will not run — the fuse, the motor and the start circuit all sit behind the cabinet at live terminals. Call immediately, and leave the machine unplugged, if it hums and will not turn, if it trips the breaker, or if anything smells hot.
