Most Likely Cause#
A GE Monogram ice maker that has stopped making ice is nearly always failing to get water to the mold or being switched off. The most common cause is a frozen water line — the fill tube or supply line freezes shut, so no water reaches the ice maker. Next comes a failed water inlet valve that will not open, a defective ice maker module, a thermostat or sensor that never signals the mold is cold enough, and the simplest of all: the ice maker's arm or on/off switch left in the off position.
Before troubleshooting, check the two things that cost nothing. Make sure the ice maker is actually turned on — the wire feeler arm must be down, or the on/off switch set to on — and confirm the freezer is cold enough to freeze ice, since a too-warm freezer will not produce it no matter what.
Two No-Tool Checks First#
- Is it switched on? The feeler arm being lifted, or the module switched off, stops production entirely. Lower the arm or set the switch to on and give it a day.
- Is the freezer cold enough? The ice maker needs a properly cold freezer to cycle. If the freezer is warm, fix the cooling problem first — the ice maker is only responding to it.

Frozen Water Line#
Because a frozen fill line is the leading cause, thaw it first. The thin fill tube that drips water into the ice mold, and the supply line feeding it, can freeze shut when a fill is slightly misaligned or the freezer runs very cold, and once iced they block all water. Warming the fill tube gently — with the ice maker off and a hair dryer on low, or by letting the area warm up — clears the ice and often restores production. If it refreezes quickly, the inlet valve may be dribbling, which points to the next cause.
Inlet Valve, Module, and Thermostat#
If the line is clear but no water arrives, the water inlet valve is the suspect — it is the solenoid valve that admits water on each cycle, and a failed one never opens. If water does reach the mold but the ice maker never ejects cubes, the module itself, or its thermostat, is likely at fault: the thermostat has to sense the mold is fully frozen before the module cycles the ice out, so a bad sensor leaves finished ice sitting in the tray. Both are tested at the module.

- Verify the freezer is cold enough to freeze ice.
- Thaw the fill tube and supply line if they are iced.
- Test the water inlet valve for proper opening.
