GE Microwave Turntable Motor Replacement — Fixing a Non-Rotating Turntable
The turntable motor in your GE microwave rotates the glass tray to ensure even microwave exposure across the food. When the motor fails, food heats unevenly — one side hot, the other cold — because the microwave energy pattern has fixed hot and cold spots that the rotating turntable is designed to average out.
Symptoms
- Turntable does not rotate — the glass tray sits still during operation. Food heats unevenly.
- Turntable rotates intermittently — works sometimes, stops during the cycle. Motor winding is failing.
- Grinding noise from under the turntable — motor gears are worn.

Motor vs Coupling vs Guide Roller
Before replacing the motor:
- Check the coupling — the plastic drive coupling connects the motor shaft to the turntable support. If the coupling teeth are stripped, the motor spins but the turntable does not move. Cost: $5-$12.
- Check the guide roller ring — the ring with small wheels that the glass tray sits on. If a wheel is broken or the ring is warped, the tray may jam. Cost: $6-$15.
- Remove the tray and coupling and listen — run the microwave empty (for 10 seconds only). If you hear the motor running, the motor is fine and the coupling or roller is the problem.

Replacement
The turntable motor is accessible from underneath the microwave — no need to open the cabinet or access high-voltage components. For countertop models, flip the microwave over. For OTR models, the motor is accessed from underneath through a small cover panel.
- Unplug the microwave
- Remove the glass tray, roller ring, and drive coupling from inside
- Access the bottom panel (remove screws)
- Disconnect the motor wire connector
- Remove 2-3 motor mounting screws
- Install the new motor, reconnect, and reassemble
This is one of the few microwave repairs that does not require cabinet access and can safely be done as a DIY project.
