GE Over-the-Range Microwave Fan Motor Replacement
GE over-the-range (OTR) microwaves include a ventilation fan that exhausts cooking vapors from the stovetop below. The fan motor drives a blower that either pushes air through ductwork to the outside (ducted mode) or through a charcoal filter and back into the kitchen (recirculating mode).
Symptoms
- Fan does not run on any speed — the motor has failed
- Fan runs but at one speed only — the speed control circuitry on the board has partially failed, or the motor winding for that speed is burned
- Excessive noise during fan operation — motor bearings are worn
- Poor exhaust performance with fan running — clogged grease filter, clogged charcoal filter (recirculating mode), or blocked ductwork (ducted mode)

Before Replacing the Motor
Clean the grease filter first — the aluminum mesh filter underneath the microwave traps grease from cooking. A clogged grease filter restricts airflow dramatically. Remove it and soak in hot water with dish soap for 15 minutes. Replace if bent or torn.
For recirculating mode: replace the charcoal filter if you have never replaced it. Charcoal filters are not washable and should be replaced every 6-12 months. A spent charcoal filter provides zero odor filtering and reduces airflow.

Professional Recommendation
Fan motor replacement on OTR microwaves requires removing the microwave from the wall mount and opening the cabinet — again exposing high-voltage components. Professional service recommended.
