GE Microwave Door Latch Replacement — Fixing a Microwave That Won't Start
GE microwaves use a three-switch interlock system on the door that must all confirm the door is closed and latched before the microwave will operate. If any switch fails, the microwave either will not start or will blow its internal fuse.
The Three-Switch System
- Primary interlock switch — confirms the door is closed. If this switch fails open, the microwave will not start.
- Secondary interlock switch (monitor switch) — a safety backup. If the primary switch fails closed (stuck), the monitor switch detects the door open and blows the internal fuse to prevent microwave radiation with the door open.
- Door sensing switch — controls the interior light and display functions.
All three switches are actuated by the door latch hooks. When the door closes, two plastic hooks (or a hook and button) press against the switch actuators.

Symptoms
- Microwave does not start, display works normally — primary interlock switch failed open
- Microwave is completely dead (no display, no light) — a failed monitor switch has blown the internal fuse. Replace the blown fuse AND the failed switch, or the new fuse will blow immediately.
- Interior light does not turn on/off with door — door sensing switch failed
- Door does not latch properly — latch hooks are broken or misaligned

High-Voltage Safety
Latch and switch replacement requires opening the microwave cabinet. The same high-voltage safety warning applies: the capacitor retains a lethal charge. Professional service is recommended. If you are trained in microwave repair, always discharge the capacitor before touching any internal components.
Fuse Connection
When a GE microwave is completely dead (no display, no response), the internal fuse has often blown due to a failed door switch — not a power problem. Replacing only the fuse without replacing the failed switch results in the new fuse blowing immediately or within days.
Dead microwave? It might be a $3 fuse and $15 switch. Professional diagnosis ensures the right parts. Book a repair
