GE Dryer Start Switch Replacement — Getting Your Dryer Running Again
The start switch on a GE dryer initiates the motor and cycle operation. When you push or turn the start knob, the switch sends power to the motor and engages the timer circuit. A failed start switch produces a specific symptom: you select your cycle settings normally, but nothing happens when you engage the start control.
Push-to-Start vs Rotary Start
GE dryers use two start switch types:
Push-to-start (GTD, GFD, PTD models) — a momentary-contact switch behind the Start button. You push and hold briefly — the motor starts and the switch hands off to the motor's centrifugal switch to maintain operation. If you release the button and the motor has not reached speed, the dryer stops.
Rotary start (older models) — the timer knob itself acts as the start switch. You turn the knob past a detent position to engage the motor. The knob must be turned firmly against a spring.

Symptoms of Start Switch Failure
- No response when pressing Start — the control panel lights up, you can select cycles and temperatures, but pressing Start produces no click, no motor hum, nothing.
- Motor starts only when holding the button — when you release the Start button, the dryer stops. This indicates the centrifugal switch inside the motor is not engaging, OR the start switch contacts are not making solid initial contact.
- Intermittent starting — sometimes the dryer starts on the first press, other times it takes 3-4 presses. The switch contacts are worn.
Diagnosis: Start Switch vs Other Components
| Symptom | Most Likely Cause |
|---|---|
| No panel lights, no response at all | Thermal fuse, breaker, power supply |
| Panel lights work, Start does nothing | Start switch |
| Panel lights work, Start makes a click but no motor | Motor, door switch, belt switch |
| Motor hums but drum does not turn | Seized motor, broken belt |
The key differentiator: if the control panel is functional (lights, display, beeps) but the Start control specifically does not initiate the motor, the start switch is isolated as the problem.

Step-by-Step Replacement
Preparation
Unplug the dryer.
Accessing the Start Switch
The start switch is located inside the control console. On top-control models: insert a putty knife at each front corner of the console to release the spring clips, flip the console back. On front-control models: remove screws at the back of the console and pull it forward. The start switch is mounted to the console panel behind the Start button, connected by 2-3 wires.
Removing the Old Switch
Disconnect the wire leads from the switch terminals (note positions or photograph). Remove the mounting screws or release clips holding the switch to the console panel. Pull the switch out, along with the actuator button if it comes with the assembly.
Installing the New Switch
Mount the new switch in the console panel. If the Start button is separate from the switch, make sure it aligns with the switch plunger. Reconnect the wire leads to the correct terminals.
Testing
Reassemble the console. Plug in the dryer. Select a cycle and press Start. The dryer should begin operation immediately. Release the Start button after 2 seconds — the dryer should continue running on its own.
Timer vs Start Switch
On older GE dryers with rotary controls, the start function is built into the timer assembly rather than a separate switch. If your dryer has a rotary timer and the start detent does not engage the motor, the entire timer assembly may need replacement ($50-$120) rather than just a start switch.
If your dryer panel lights up but the Start button does nothing, the switch is the likely culprit — a quick, inexpensive repair. Book service
